Adding a Link to My Blog

  • Unknown's avatar

All I want is a bit of text and/or a link in my blog’s sidebar.

I found the Widgets section, and there seems to be several widgets that could accomplish what I need. The only problem is, when I add a widget, everything currently in my sidebar goes away.

I thought maybe I could just add all the widgets that were there before plus the new one, but my theme shows different widgets depending on if I’m at the home page or a post’s permalink.

Why is this so difficult. It seems like the Widgets section should have a check box to indicate if the widgets I add should be in place of or in addition to the widgets already there. All I want to add is a simple link to the them (Note: the theme I’m using doesn’t support menus so that’s not an option.)

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

when I add a widget, everything currently in my sidebar goes away.

That is what happens. Just add back in what you want.

I have no idea why you’re not getting widgets in your sidebar on individual pages, unless you’re making every post a Sticky or something.

The widget you want, by the way, is the Links widget, and you don’t actually configure it on the widget page; it has its own page.

Thanks, but as I described in my original post, different widgets appear depending on if you are on my blog’s home page or one of the posts dedicated page. It appears I lose that if I have to manually specify what widgets are to be shown.

For example, when I view a blog, I get navigation widgets to the previous and next post. These don’t show from the home page. How can I “add back” this?

I do not know; I have never seen that happen before, and when I tried that theme on my test blog, it did not behave that way. I’m mystified.

@trail, this is due to the way this theme is designed. It isn’t a bug.

If you have not added any widgets to the sidebar, the main home page, and static pages will display the default sample set of widgets. The sidebar of the single-post pages will show an “about this post section, the search box, and a navigation link to a previous or next post.

Once you add widgets to the sidebar, the main home page, static pages, and single post pages will all show the exact same widget set.

This is just the way this theme is designed. For whatever reason, the theme designer decided to put different default sample things on the single-post pages.

Oh, I did not know that. Thanks for that. In four and a half years here I never encountered that.

Chaoticsoul is a little strange. I’m unsure as to why the designer set up the default set of widgets that way. Seems like either an oversight, or perhaps a brain fart.

thesacredpath: Well, thanks for the confirmation. So, you’re saying it’s the theme and not so much WordPress. That part wasn’t clear to me.

I like the theme but, basically, it makes it impossible to add a tiny link to the sidebar and keep the existing functionality.

    Rats!
