Adding a reCAPTCHA to the Contact Form?
-
Hi. Just as the title says, is there a way to add a reCAPTCHA to the native Contact Form? I’m not using a Contact Form plugin, and I don’t see a reCAPTCHA option as one of the choices for the Contact Form block. Or any other way to reduce contact form spam?
Thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There’s A LOT of spam coming through the form block. Most of it is getting sent to the contact form spam folder in WordPress. A few get through to my email. But catching it and saving it in the spam folder is not the best option because I still need to go through it and make sure nothing legit got tagged as spam. I would rather make it harder for spammers to get through in the first place.
(BTW, I can’t tell you right now how many are in the spam folder because I can’t access anything in the admin section of the site at the moment. I have left an email message, a chat message, and a new topic in this forum about it, but so far, no one has reponded. I just get an “Invalid Nonce” error message when I try to access anything on the backend.)

I noticed that your website wasn’t properly linked to your account, and I’ve fixed the “invalid nonce” error that you mentioned in another post. You should now be able to login without any problems. I apologize for any delay in resolving this for you.
Regarding the spam in your contact form, it’s unfortunately a common tactic used by spammers. Akismet is designed to catch most of these, but spammers often try to bypass its filtering by changing their tactics to get around the filtering. We rely on our users to report any spam, which helps Akismet learn and prevent similar spam in the future. Additionally, any spam caught by your contact form will be automatically deleted after 14 days.
While CAPTCHA technology is meant to prevent spam and protect websites from bots and fraud, it can sometimes be overly effective. For instance, reCAPTCHA v3 can have a high false-positive rate, potentially blocking genuine prospects. This could result in lost business as customers might prefer to go elsewhere than deal with the barriers imposed by these tools.
Although it’s frustrating, manually checking the spam for legitimate contacts may be a better long-term solution than potentially deterring genuine customers from reaching out. As time goes on, you might notice that there are no genuine requests in your spam folder. This could indicate that the tools are effectively filtering out unwanted content, and you may find it unnecessary to manually check the spam folder in the future.
I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any questions or need help with anything else.
