adding a search option

  I am trying to add a search option to my page but each time I press the appearance / widget button it only offers me the option to add it to the footer and I can not drag it to put it where I want it. Am I doing something wrong? I just want an option on my main page so people can search for past posts

  You may want to add it as a block instead then. See here:
