adding a widget makes other ones disappear?
-
I have read on here enough now to know that each theme comes with default widgets and that if you add a new widget to your sidebar, the default ones disappear. What I want to know is how to you keep the default widgets as well, and add new ones without any of them disappearing? I noticed too on some themes, it completely changes the width of the content area when I want to add a new widget.
Is there an easy way to just add all the widgets I want in the default sidebar without them going away or making changes to the theme (I don’t know CSS and don’t want to mess with that). Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m not really sure what you mean by “if you add a new widget to your sidebar, the default ones disappear” cus I’ve never seen that happening but but you can save the widgets by dragging them from the sidebar (in your dashboard) all the way down to the Inactive Widgets box. I dont know how each theme affects widgets that are already there on your blog (since each theme utilizes them differently) but Im thinking most would just stay the way they are (different placing maybe though). Saving the widgets in your Inactive Widgets box is a good way, just in case something goes wrong after you switched a theme.
You just need to pick a a good theme you like and add widgets. You dont want to be switching themes each week, right.

well, I have been switching themes continuously as some seem to lack the ability to add the right widgets, and/or add and save new pages. I don’t get it. I try these things but they do not save? What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

You can’t change the default set of widgets, not even with a CSS upgrade. We don’t have access to that on wordpress.com.
“I noticed too on some themes, it completely changes the width of the content area when I want to add a new widget.”
I’m not clear what you mean by that? Themes have different content and sidebar widths. Here are some most excellent articles about widgets:

Not if you’re continuously switching themes ofcourse. I don’t know how many widgets or what kind of widgets you’re planning to add, but you can’t have it all, some widgets will work on some themes, others won’t (though I think the majority works on all themes). Unless you create your own theme from scratch.
So pick a theme and start adding widgets, and use the method I described above to save the widgets in case you’re planning to switch themes.
And do you really need that Widget when the next solar eclipse in India is?

@starsquid
Actually, all the standard widgets work in all the themes except for a few which are special cases. Some themes don’t show widgets all the time though. Details here:
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/widgets-on-pages-or-single-posts/BTW, when I first started at wp there were a number of themes which were not widget aware but staff has changed that.
I have several test blogs, so I switch themes all the time to answer questions here or to experiment with for myself. It gets annoying to have to go back and put widgets back in, but that’s the way things are.
And how do I find that widget for when the next solar eclipse in India is?

Yes, each theme has it quirks and wrinkles. But as starsquid said, just pick a theme and start using it. After you have written some posts you will most likely discover that there are some things you thought you needed which you don’t, and vice versa.
A too many choices can leave people in a position that they can’t decide on anything. Don’t let all the possibilities stop you from just beginning!
