Adding an Ad Into Right Rail
-
Apologies if this is in the wrong section. I’m looking to add an ad tag to the right column on my website. Is this possible? The code that was sent over is below. Can someone advise how I can add this?
<script type=’text/javascript’><!–//<![CDATA[ document.MAX_ct0 =”; var m3_u = (location.protocol==’https:’?’https://cas.criteo.com/delivery/ajs.php?’:’http://cas.criteo.com/delivery/ajs.php?’); var m3_r = Math.floor(Math.random()*99999999999); document.write (“<scr”+”ipt type=’text/javascript’ src='”+m3_u); document.write (“zoneid=171876”);document.write(“&nodis=1”); document.write (‘&cb=’ + m3_r); if (document.MAX_used != ‘,’) document.write (“&exclude=” + document.MAX_used); document.write (document.charset ? ‘&charset=’+document.charset : (document.characterSet ? ‘&charset=’+document.characterSet : ”)); document.write (“&loc=” + escape(window.location)); if (document.referrer) document.write (“&referer=” + escape(document.referrer)); if (document.context) document.write (“&context=” + escape(document.context)); if ((typeof(document.MAX_ct0) != ‘undefined’) && (document.MAX_ct0.substring(0,4) == ‘http’)) { document.write (“&ct0=” + escape(document.MAX_ct0)); } if (document.mmm_fo) document.write (“&mmm_fo=1”); document.write (“‘></scr”+”ipt>”);//]]>–></script>

Hi,
Unfortunately, JavaScript is not allowed here in WordPress.com so you can’t use that particular embed code.
Here’s a list of codes that are allowed and not allowed.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/If your embed code has any of the codes that are not allowed, it won’t work unless you can find a different embed code that does not have the codes that are not allowed.
Hope that helps!

Thanks! Does anyone have any experience with working with advertisers? The code was supplied to me from an advertising company. Is there something comparable that I could suggest or do you think they’ll be locked in to using Java?
I’m just concerned with blowing this opportunity.
I’m assuming Java is able to be used with wordpress.org?

You can’t sell your own ads if you are hosted here – your blog will be suspended – no notice required –
You might also review the TOS before you get too far along:

No blogger initiated advertising is allowed on WordPress.com blogs. The only blogs that can be equipped for ecommerce are those with the $299. per year business upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/ecommerce/
The only advertising program at WordPress.com is called WordAds and it’s for blogs on their own domains.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed.

There are no restrictions if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities. Please see this guide to learn about the differences.

Great info, thank you!
I’m guessing it might be time to switch to a .org site. I had over a million hits last month and I’m seriously considering advertising after being contacted be an agency.
Does anyone know the level of difficulty in switching to .org and an idea of the costs associated. The site will not require ecommerce.

For self-hosting figure an average monthly total cost (including cost of a domain name) of about $10 to $25 generally, but that all depends on your storage and bandwidth requirements.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/1. Hire a web host and purchase a domain http://wordpress.org/hosting/
2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
http://wordpress.org/themes/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/3. To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme and widgets as they cannot be exported. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.
4. WordPress.com is the top level domain here and all blogs hosted by WordPress.com are on .wordpress.com sub-domains. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/#change-name-servers-to-point-the-domain-outside-of-wordpress-com and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/5. Transfer subscribers and stats. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
6. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Does anyone know the level of difficulty in switching to .org
You will be responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting. If you install a theme or a plugin that negatively affects your blog, then you have to figure out what went wrong and fix it.
As the majority of WordPress.ORG software users do have monetized blogs and as there is no staff support on the wordpress.org support forums there is no hand-holding support like what you get here. You are expected to read the manual ie. the Codex and search before posting to the forums. My experience is that one can wait for days, weeks and even months to get help.
