Adding An Additional Domain
-
Hi again. I have a question regarding a notice about a domain sale in my ddavidd.com dashboard. I’m guessing it’s the same in my dashboard for my other websites as well, but I haven’t looked at those in awhile.
It reads “Domains on sale starting at $6” with an Add button that takes you to domain search page within the dashboard.
Am I correct to assume that using this option to purchase another domain, will just give me another domain that will point to the site I have at ddavidd.com ?
If that is correct, how exactly does it work? For example if I were to purchase anothersitedomain.com (hypothetical made up for example), and gave that address out to people, and they type that into their browser, is that the domain they will see when they browse around the site, or will simply redirect them to ddavidd.com, and ddavidd.com is the domain they will see after the redirect happens?
I just want to make sure I understand exactly how this feature is going to work before deciding on this, or just setting up a completely new site for a domain I have in mind possibly.
Thanks for your help.

Hi there,
Am I correct to assume that using this option to purchase another domain, will just give me another domain that will point to the site I have at ddavidd.com ?
That’s right. If you buy a second domain for an existing site, both domains will point to the same site, but the domain you set as primary will be the one people see in their browser. If someone types in the secondary domain, they’ll be redirected to the primary one via a 301 redirect.
Search engines will index you content at the primary domain, but if you have your site verified in Google Search Console, you can also add your additional domains there so Google will know they’re all associated with the same site.
Let me know if you have any other questions about this :)

Thank you. That is helpful info.
This leads me to another question. I have another website – mudpix.com
Hypothetically is it possible to drop the site I have set up on that domain, keep that domain, and have it redirect to my ddavidd.com ?
I’m not really sure I would actually want to do that since it is the official website for my photography, but both of these sites essentially are centered around my photography.
I’m seeing on my ddavidd.com site that I’m still eligible to upgrade to the Business plan (I’m guessing because it’s an old site now before the plan changes) which I would prefer over the new Pro plan because I’m planning to start uploading photos to galleries on my site, and maybe if I had both of these domains pointed to this site, it could possibly be beneficial as it would leave only one site to maintain.
Is this possible if I decided to do that, or is mudpix.com essentially stuck where it’s at, being that it is the primary for it’s own site? If that’s the case, I could always just convert it to a landing page with links pointing to my main website if I decide I don’t want to maintain it much anymore.

It is.
You can move the domain from the current site to the same site as ddavidd.com. mudpix.com will then automatically redirect to ddavidd.com as a secondary domain. The other site will revert to using the free mudpix.wordpress.com address.
If you also want your free address, mudpix.wordpress.com, to redirect to ddavidd.com, that needs a separate Site Redirect upgrade on that site:
https://wordpress.com/en/support/site-redirect/
But as you’ve been using mudpix.com since 2017 I wouldn’t bother with that – a site redirect is only useful if there are many links using the free WordPress.com address floating around on the web, and there’s not likely to be many of those if your site has been on a custom domain for several years already.
I’m seeing on my ddavidd.com site that I’m still eligible to upgrade to the Business plan (I’m guessing because it’s an old site now before the plan changes) which I would prefer over the new Pro plan
Pro includes all the features of Business, at almost half the cost, so I’m curious why you’d prefer Business.
If it’s about the lower storage, we will be launching an add-on for Pro to increase storage, and even with that add-on it will still be cheaper than the legacy Business Plan.
It’s up to you, but I wouldn’t want you to spend more money than you need to if you decided to upgrade :)

Again great information. I’m pretty sure I won’t move the mudpix.com site because like you said, it’s been there for quite awhile. I was just curious if that could be done. I will save that information.
Also thanks for the info about the storage issue. Yes, it is the 200GB storage allowance that is appealing to me on the Business plan. I’ve had both of these sites for awhile intending to start uploading my photography but life and day jobs got in the way, so these sites have been going without updates for awhile, and I need to get busy working if I’m ever going to get my photos out to be seen. I’ve pretty much decided the ddavidd.com site is going to be where I upload most of my photography. The mudpix.com site will have some, but not as much. I don’t know that I will ever actually need 200GB. It’s just a high number of storage that I know I would probably never have to worry about going over.
I started my photography in 2016 and have taken thousands of photos. I would like to basically upload them all over time in chronological order because I sell my photography in the form of pdf photo ebooks. I’d like to give viewers a chance to see the work (watermarked of course on the site) before they make purchases. It will be a lot of uploading, so I’m going to need quite a bit of storage on the ddavidd.com site when I’m ready, even though I’m not uploading high-definition photos. They are only going to be 800 px wide by 1000 px height, so the file sizes individually won’t be much, but without thousands of photos going up, it’s going to be a lot. I currently have 1 32GB, and 2 16GB sd cards for my camera filled up I want to upload, plus I’m constantly taking new photos with my Samsung phone which pretty much outdoes my my Canon these days in some ways.
I’m in process of switching to a new template on the ddavidd.com site with a block theme. I wanted to make the site as current as possible with the new Gutenburg block system because once I get going, I don’t want to have to do another template for a long time, if ever again.
Anyway now I’m rambling (sorry). So you mentioned the ability to add additional storage on the pro plan. I guess honestly I will need to see what these options are when they are made available. I was considering the Pro also, but also I may just go with the Premium plan for awhile if I need to because I may decide I don’t want to do all the uploading, but put some ebooks up on the site for free download, and the rest of my work could be bought in my Gumroad store.
So there you have it in a nutshell. I have a lot of photos to work with and trying to work out my plan options for the storage when I need it.
Any word on when more details are coming out about add-on options for the Free and Pro plans?

I meant with thousands of photos.

Hey there,
Any word on when more details are coming out about add-on options for the Free and Pro plans?
There is not yet a definitive timeframe yet, but the team in charge of Plans & Pricing is working hard to get an update out as soon as possible. It is indeed a top priority at the moment.
Keep an eye out on the Sticky Post because we’ll be sure to update that once new information is available.
Thanks!
