Adding an existing domain
-
I’m trying to create a new site and use an existing domain.
Background
I have a domain registered on Google Domains. It used to point to an old tumblr blog and I’ve deleted all the old DNS records. I want to use my existing domain registration and create a new site on wordpress.Steps
1. Logged into WordPress.
2. Click on the ‘My Site’ tab and clicked ‘Create Site’ button.
3. Step 1 of 4 – Let’s get started. Select ‘A welcome page for my site’
4. Step 2 of 4 – Choose a theme. Clicked ‘skip for now’ (didn’t see the theme I want)
5. Step 3 of 4 – Let’s find a domain. Clicked ‘Already own a domain?’
6. Step 3 of 4 – Entered my domain name and clicked ‘Add’
7. Step 4 of 4 – Clicked the ‘Upgrade’ button on the Premium plan.
8. Rerouted to Step 3 of 4 – with the error of ‘Please enter a site name’.At this point I am in an infinite loop of my steps 5 & 6. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Sean

Hi Sean –
Thanks for reaching out to us for help. I’ll get this all sorted out for you.
What is the domain that you are trying to map to your WordPress.com account?
Try adding the Premium Plan from wordpress.com/pricing/ then, after you have paid for the upgrade click on My Sites > Domains > Mapping option. Let me know if that works.

Hi Liz,
Just so you know, I don’t have any sites yet in the “My Sites” tab. When I do use the https://wordpress.com/pricing/ page and select the premium option it throws me into step 2 of the create new site wizard. (point #3 in my above comment thread) and then I get back into the infinite loop issue again.
The url I’m trying to map is uxkitchen.com

Good morning Sean –
The issue was that there was not a free .wordpress.com site address added to the account yet. Each custom domain needs a free .wordpress.com site to link it to your account.
While you (and staff at WordPress.com) see both the free and custom domain in your account, the visitors to uxkitchen.com will only see that domain as the free site address redirects automatically.
Any questions about that?
Now, when you sign in and click My Sites you’ll see that uxkitchen.com is listed. I’ve set up the mapping on our end with WordPress.com Personal Plan.
Let me know if you want to proceed with Personal or a different plan? I’ll send an email your way with a secure payment link.
There’s one more step that you’ll need to complete. It’s step #2 here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/ This is what tells the internet to load your WordPress.com site when someone enters uxkitchen.com in to their browser.
