    After I click on ‘add a widget’ and select ‘image widget’ I try to insert the ‘cross-hairs’ between two existing widgets and WP tries to substitute the new addition for either the one or the other. How do I get it to allow me to add an image without deleting the older ones?

    The Image Widget doesn’t have the option of a caption. There is a title field if that’s what you mean.

    Not sure what you mean by ‘cross-hairs.’ You should be able to drag and drop your widgets, arranging them in any order, as described in the Adding and Configuring Widgets section of the Widgets support page. I was unable to replicate the issue you describe. Can you provide a screenshot to illustrate what you describe? If necessary, see the Making a Screenshot support page and its Sharing your screenshot section.
