Adding background …

  • Unknown's avatar

    If I check a background colour ( appears to be available without upgrade) does that apply to just the page one is editing or the whole blog (which I definitely don’t want!) ? (Don’t want to find myself fighting to get rid of it!)
    Please and thankyou.

    If you mean in Appearance>Background, whole blog. I’m not aware of a background colour option in the post or page editor. If what you want is some bg color to the content of a single page, you can do it using HTML.

    It looks as if you can only do a whole lot of things if you get the upgrade for CSS. It isn’t very clear. But as I noticed the panel was there I just thought …that’s interesting. Maybe a background colour for a bit of verse or whatever.
    I tried some HTML on that experimental page…but it didn’t work. I probably got it wrong. I don’t really need it, but as I said once before I like to know where the walls are.
    paytheline…thankyou…I will have a look.
    Today I conquered putting an image on the sidebar (which is effectively text) …small triumphs! Thanks both.

    Some themes provide for a custom background and some do not. If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

    Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

    If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

    If you do purchase the upgrade be sure to read this article before starting your editing > http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/

    The theme on the blog linked to your user name is Twenty Ten and that theme does allow for uploading a custom background. See here > Appearance > Themes > Background

    Yes, thanks, I saw that, but Panos says that is for the whole blog…I just thought it might be nice for the odd page. I assume I can’t do that on my theme?
    It is quite hard to find out exactly what you can and can’t do. But all in all it is fantastic that WordPress has made it possible to do as much as I have, even if somewhat ham-fistedly!
    No I won’t be up-grading!

    PS “paytheline” was just a spammer.

    Thanks, I will mess about. This is beginning to be ‘diversionary activity’ . I am starting to feel guilty about enjoying it!
    Is some-one who chips in a ‘spammer’ then? There are obviously rules I din’t know about. Goodnight all. Julia

    We Volunteers can spot a apmmer and it’s wise never to click links posted by people claiming they have something for you – 99% of the time they are either autmated spam bots or people who are spamming.

    OK thanks for the info. This is a brilliant forum. It makes up for greyed out keys in Wordress panels that are actually active when you eventually get desperate enough to click on them! Eureka! Silly things take up hours of time. Somewhere or other it says you can set up a blog in two hours!!! I daresay you can, once you know HOW! It has taken me 4 weeks! But then, I didn’t expect it to be easy.
    It is my fourth attempt over the years and this time I was determined to do it.
    Cheers. Julia

    You can do some simple customization of each page using the DIV tag and its STYLE attribute. In the editor go to HTML mode. At the top of the page (or post) enter this.

    <div style=css>
    Thousands of paragraphs.
    </div>

    Instead of css enter this: “background-color:blue;” WITH the quote marks. The W3Schools web page has detailed info about how to code colors other than blue, include named, hexadecimal, and rgb color codes.

    http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp

    Once you get the hang of using the STYLE attribute you can do a fair amount of customization. Here is mine for chapters from a book.

    <div style=”line-height:110%; text-align:justify; font-size:14pt; font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif; color:#000000; background-color:#ffffff; border:2px solid blue; padding:15px;”>

    This does the following.

    The height of each line is made “airier” than the default.
    I wanted the text justified.
    I wanted a larger font size. (Each them has a different default.)
    I wanted Times font.
    Text color is black, background white.
    A blue border goes around everything.
    There’s padding between the border and the text.

    A lot trouble? I just stored the DIV/STYLE in a text file and do a paste each time I create a page. It takes me about a minute per page.

    Thanks all (a bit late as I have been taking time off to get out a bit more!) I will copy that and do some experimenting. It is all a bit like magic!
    Cheers, Julia

    @ larryeugenecarroll
    visited your web-site (as I do for all here)…very interesting (as they all are) but I am curious, you are using Twenty Ten and 1) you have a frame around the whole page, and 2) you have different panels of content for each (or several) page header…. is this down to a CSS upgrade or is it available should I want it? Just so I know.
    I can see once you have the message with HTML you simply store the reference you need.
    If I were younger I would really enjoy being a web designer. I see so many websites that are so clever that they defeat their purpose, or are just simply dreary and long-winded to use.
    I like the Astro show. Amazing. I am not sure how much I can do with LINKS yet.
    Am getting ambitious!
