adding button to allow WP users to follow this site

Have used the generator to create HTML to allow users to follow, lifted the code generated and added it to my site home page but that gives me an unrecoverable HTML error and creates a button that does not add the reader as a follower. What am I not doing correctly? Thanks.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

I checked the Follow button you added to your site, and it appears to be working fine for me. So the error might be restricted to the Editor only.

However, I see your site used to be on our Business Plan where you had plugins or a custom theme installed. That changes how a WordPress.com site works, and the site will not work correctly now that you no longer have a plan unless we properly downgrade it.

This will remove all plugins and third party themes you still have installed, and there is also a risk that any content you added since you first installed plugins may be lost during this process. But once this process is done, your site will work the same as it did before you first installed plugins, including showing a follow button to visitors by default, i.e. you wouldn’t need this HTML button.

Please confirm if we can proceed with downgrading your site to the free plan.

Please take whatever actions necessary. Sorry to be bother. thank you. spwilcen

  • Thanks for confirming. We’ve properly downgraded your site to the free plan, and it looks like we were able to preserve all your content, but let us know if you spot anything missing.

As for the original issue, your site now shows the built-in follow button bottom-right of the screen, so you don’t need the HTML button any more.

Let us know if we can help with anything else :)

Now get an error “Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain.” whether I try to access the site from WP login “visit site” or either spwilcenrites.wordpress.com or spwilcenwrites.wpcomstaging.com. I am not interested in a paid site at this time though I was business previously. If a paid site is required to continue, I will delete my site. Appreciate your help, again. Thank you.

When you had the Business plan, it allowed you to use your own domain name spwilcenwrites.com. I can get your site to load just fine at spwilcenwrites.wordpress.com so you’re likely seeing a cached version of your page before we did the downgrade. Refresh your browser cache and that should sort that out.

While you don’t need Business specifically to use your domain name, you do need one of our paid plans to use the domain.

If you want to instead use your free spwilcenwrites.wordpress.com URL, you can do so without needing to have a paid upgrade.

Since the site is loading under spwilcenwrites.wordpress.com without any notices of the domain upgrade, you should be all set.
