adding categories to Quadrat White by Automattic
-
Hello,
I’m sorry I don’t have the terminology to describe my problem, but I will do my best.
Essentially, I put my blog posts in categories (film, creative writing, music, etc.) and I want on the home page of my blog for these categories to show up.
I have tried going into appearance > menus and selecting which categories I want to be visible. But no luck. I currently have ticked ‘Primary Navigation’ but see nothing. When I tick ‘Social Navigation’ I get the share icon (an arrow with a dot on each end of the arrow) but no words appear. All I can see is Home along the top of my, well, home page.
I’m on free WordPress. I have some clickable icons for BlueSky/Insta etc., but I just want a ribbon of post categories.
Help me WordPress peeps,
You’re my only hope!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, so if you look at the Preview or demo site for Quadrat, you’ll see that there is a main navigation banner at the top right of the theme. You can add your categories by adding a new menu in the Customizer>Menu and setting it as your Primary Navigation. Then click Next.

On the next screen you can ADD ITEMS to your new menu and one of the options will be to add your categories. Click the little down arrow on the right of that Categories line and you can than click the plus sign next to each category to add them to your menu.

Once you’ve added all the categories to your new menu, make sure to click the SAVE CHANGES button to make the menu live on your site.
Hope that helps but post back here if you have other questions.

Hi 2020testjj,
Thanks for taking the time to have a look at this for me. I tried following your steps, but my screens weren’t the same as your screen shots and I couldn’t make the categories be clickable.
I went to the Menus & Categories. I made sure to tick the box for Primary Navigation. But nothing happened. I don’t understand it.
I just tried using the Live Editor too, but also nothing.
Is it because I am using a free version of the site?
Thanks

Hi again, adding menus to a website isn’t dependent on plan. .
What browser and Operating System are you using? Have you tried using a different browser?
If you’d like to share a screenshot here of what you see, you can follow this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/make-a-screenshot/
