adding categories to your blog page

I would like to have a category “Past Magazine Articles” on the side of my blog. I’d like it to show a scroll down bar with a list of the titles of the past articles. I would also like another category with “Past Writings”. Help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there! I wanted to confirm that you wanted these items on your sidebar, rather than as top level menu items (next to your About link). If you add too many items to your sidebar, that area becomes congested and it’s difficult for your readers.
Having said that, regardless of where you install this drop-down menu, the first step is to create the Categories you want:
en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/
The next step is to publish posts that are assigned to these categories:
Then, you’ll create custom menus:
Finally, you can either install the menu as a top-level menu item at the top of your page. Those directions will be listed on the link about. Or, you can add a menu widget to your sidebar:

I hope this sheds some light on the subject. If you get stuck anywhere along the way, please let us know and we can give you a hand. :)

I didn’t see how to publish a post according to an assigned category? So just now I published a post that is really a previous article. It’s now posted on my front page as a blog entry but I want it to go to the menu bar “freeplay magazine articles”.

Hi again! I believe there’s still a bit of confusion about how all the features work on your WordPress.com site, and I’d like to help clear them up so you can publish your site.
The item on your menu bar, Freeplay Magazine Articles, is a categories widget. This means that when clicked, it will display all your categories beneath. It is not a post-display widget, therefore your latest article can never display there.
When I take a look at your posts, I do not see that any are assigned to categories. They are all defaulting to Uncategorized. Take a look and observe the Categories column:
https://sportgirlblogdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=postTo assign your Posts to categories, please take a look at the following:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/If you would like your top level menu to behave in the same manner as your Theme’s demo, I can help you set that up. Could you please look at the following:
http://watsondemo.wordpress.com/Click on links for Sport, Travel, and Food. These are categories that have been added to the site’s menu. Would you like a links such as Freeplay Magazine Articles, Past Magazine Articles, etc, that behave in the same manner?
Please let me know. Thanks very much.
