adding columns to my page

  I want to have a homepage with a large image on it sort of like a splash page and then a sidebar with categories such as : portraits, oils, pastels, water colors and the like. I would also like to have thumbnails of each image (under each category so that when clicked they allow the viewer to see a larger version of it.
  I tried adding a right sidebar to my existing layout but it’s not letting me do it.
  Can you help?

  Adding columns is a bit beyond the scope of what can be customized at WordPress.com.

  Have you tried a theme that already has more columns?

  I think I will add categories with new pages. Is it possible to add many thumbnails to one page? Then click to make them larger?
