Adding comment count to home page

  • Unknown's avatar

I want readers to be able to see how many comments are on an entry> My current theme, “Personal,” does not show that anywhere either on the homepage or on a permalink page. We paid for the CSS editor, but I am not experienced with coding and don’t know how to add that kind of feature, and Googling it isn’t coming up with quite what I need. Can y’all help with that at all?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Do your see a comment count displayed on the theme here?

Do you see one displayed here?

If the theme is not designed to include a comment count then you cannot display what does not exist within the coding of the underlying template.

I don’t help with CSS editing but I do note this:

Does the Custom Design upgrade let me edit HTML?
No. The Custom Design upgrade allows you to edit fonts, colors, and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup or PHP code. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

I suggest you use this link to create a thread in the CSS forum and those who help there will tell you whether or not the comment count can be added via CSS editing. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform

Ah, thank you, I missed that clarification in the custom CSS thing. I thought the whole point of the custom design was to give you more freedom to edit your HTML — that is super frustrating! I will definitely go in there and ask.

CSS is not HTML or PHP. All blogs here wearing the same theme are using the same underlying template. We bloggers cannot access and edit templates because every edit would chnage every blog using the same underlying template. Only Staff can access and edit templates. CSS editing is for changing theme appearance only. It cannot be used to change the way any theme is designed to function.

Excellent, thanks for the clarification! Do you happen to know if they ever make additions to/alterations to the themes? Like, would they ever consider adding the ability to include that type of thing as part of the template’s customization? Do the theme makers, or WordPress itself, ever take requests like that?

Last question for you, I promise. Much appreciated.

I’m sorry but I cannot answer that. What I can tell you is part of what you paid form when you bought a premium theme is support direct from the theme’s designer in the premium theme support forum http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/personal

The person with the username account who purchased the theme can post to the Premium Theme Support forum for the theme to get and answer there.
