    Right, you can’t

    Plugins

That’s not possible. You can’t install Disqus on a WordPress.COM blog. This is a multiuser blogging platform. Our blogs are not free standing. There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we bloggers cannot install any plugins. There is no upgrade you can purchase that will provide FTP access and the ability to install plugins, upload themes, and/or edit templates and themes in a free hosted WordPress.com blog.

To use plugins you must hire a web host and then set up your own WordPress.org install. Please read this comparison > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Okay, but then is there any way to customise the comments section? For instance, some of my readers don’t like that they have to give their email every time they comment,or that they can’t comment using say, their facebook account or yahoo (that they are probably already logged into) Seems a bit odd really.

spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam. Spam comes in waves. There are human beings who get paid to post spam. There are robotic programs that post spam. So setting up anonymous commenting is not, of course, recommended.

This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments.

    Discussion Settings
    Other comment settings
_Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to comment

Note that the prompt to submit and email address and a website URL will still appear, but providing an email address and logging in are not required, and you cannot change this so the prompt does not appear.

You can post instructions for your visitors in a text widget if you wish to set up anonymous commenting. That’s easy to do. You copy and paste this into a text widget:

Readers: Note that the email address and logging in prompts do appear for comments on this blog, but providing an email address and logging in are not required.

P.S. Do be sure to set up full comment moderation ie. “An administrator must always approve the comment” because anonymous commenting is bound to increase the amount of spam your blog will receive.
