Adding domain without upgrading

Hi there, I’m trying to register a domain without purchasing a plan. I know it’s possible because friends have done it. Can you tell me why I don’t have this option- each time I enter my desired domain, I am only given the upgrade button – and if it’s possible to fix it so I can purchase a domain for $18 without upgrading to premium? Thank you.

Hi @yennvu – There have been some changes recently regarding Custom Domains and the upgraded options. Currently, in order to register a custom domain on WordPress.com you will need to upgrade your plan to Premium.

You can register free domains without upgrading your plan, those domains look like this yourblogname.wordpress.com.

Thank you for your response – the thing is my friend is also creating her website but still has an add option for $18 instead of an upgrade option when she inserts her desired domain. I don’t understand how that is possible with the information you’ve given me.

@yennvu – According to Staff replies here in the forums, the change occurred about 7-10 days ago. Any new account or new domain sign up is now redirected to purchase a plan.
