Adding Etsy shop and other widgets?
-
I am considering moving my blog to WordPress, but can’t seem to find a solution for adding my Etsy shop widget (either Javascript or Flash) to my sidebars, as well as some other Javascript-based widgets that are essential.
Thanks in advance,

I should have said – I have no problem paying for some upgrade, if that’s what it takes to have these options…

Unfortunately we can’t use Javascript on our blogs for security reasons; it gets stripped out whenever we put the code in a post or a text widget, so there’s no way round that, no upgrade, etc. You probably wouldn’t want to incorporate too much of your store into your blog either as WP.com blogs are non-commercial; a discrete link to your store in the sidebar is okay, but anything more than that might be a problem with staff.

Too bad… My blog is actually Non-Profit, since it is aimed at Etsy sellers, full of business advice – but the Etsy Mini is important to just show what is possible… I doubt anyone ever clicks on it.
Okay, will delete my WP blog now and move over to Typepad. It is currently on Blogger, and their lack of support is driving me nuts…
Thanks a bunch!

Yep, we just had the same problem. Opened for an hour and am about to close it. All the stuff we want on our blog is Java related. Over to Typepad too – sorry :(

cjwriter,
I’m an Etsy seller too setting up my blog for info regarding my business and related to my creative process, etc. In your experience is this alright? (I know you can’t speak on behalf of the staff.) My interpretation of the terms is that it’s OK but …? I am just trying to get my blog up here until my graphics designer has time to get it all together w/wordpress.org etc. Thanks!

@startsnfits – Since you’ve read the ToS (bless you!) and, I assume, the information in the FAQ regarding Adsense and other advertising, your best bet is to contact support when it reopens and ask.
Support is open 8a – 4p Pacific, and when it’s open you’ll find a Support tab in the upper right of your dashboard.

I’m wondering why we are still not able to have widgets that support javascript. I love the way edublogs has incorporated so many, but really prefer to stay with wordpress – if only we have a more responsive collection of widgets to choose from. The widget options at edublogs are awesome and constantly being improved. Isn’t this something that wordpress could consider doing now too? Would love you ever more guys!!

We are still not able to have widgets that have javascript. It’s because we share the backbones of our blogs and a security risk introduced by one person would affect everyone using that theme; that’s just WAY too much exposure. If you really must have javascript, you can always get hosting independently and install software from WordPress.org that works much the same. Isn’t edublogs a WordPress install of some kind?

I’m very new to all of this, but the Etsy Mini also has a Flash option. Is it possible to use that instead?
