Adding Evoca Microphone to My WordPress.com Blog
-
How do I add the Evoca microphone to my blog. I’ve tried the code that they say to use, and many variations of it, but nothing seems to work. Maybe it just won’t, but then again maybe someone knows the right way to do it. Any help would be very greatly appreciated!

I suspect it’s probably Javascript which is stripped becuase of security concerns.
Can you provide a link or the code so that we can have a look?
Ta!

Hi Cornell,
The code they give for WP.com (not WP.org) is:
<div id=”evoca_inBlogRecorder_vert”><object classid=”clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000″ codebase=”http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,29,0″ width=”220″ height=”270″>
<param name=”movie” value=”http://evoca.com/evocaRecorder/inBlogRecorder_v.swf” />
<param name=”quality” value=”high” />
<param name=”wmode” value=”transparent” /><param name=”FlashVars” value=”ownerid=12347&teu=http://evoca.com/&hideCommentCount=true” />
<embed src=”http://evoca.com/evocaRecorder/inBlogRecorder_v.swf” FlashVars=”ownerid=12347&teu=http://evoca.com/&hideCommentCount=true” quality=”high” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”220″ height=”270″ wmode=”transparent” ></embed>
</object></div> -

Unfortunately that’s a flash file. It’s trying to embed it into the page and like Javascript it is stripped due to security concerns.
I can’t see an easy way that you’ll be able to get this onto your wp.com blog. Is there anyone at Evoca (support for example) that you can ask?

Hi Cornell,
Thanks for your response. I’ll try to find out from someone at Evoca. Thanks again!

Just in case you forgot to check the FAQs here’s the link http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/23/can-i-add-flash-video-embed-other-media/ -
Well… this is unfortunate if this is truly the case… and I too was unable to paste the code successfully! And confusing, since evoca.com mentions that wordpress.org and wordpress.com supports it, though it looks like there’s 2 different plugins.
“This plugin is for WordPress.org blogs. WordPress.com blogs can use the standard Evoca Browser Mic.”
For wordpress.org (Evoca Broswer Mic plug-in / download)…
http://www.evoca.com/myaccount/recorder_wordpress.jspFor wordpress.com (standard Evoca Browser Mic / cut n paste code)…
http://www.evoca.com/myaccount/recorder.jspIt’s possible that one may need to be logged into one’s evoca account to access these pages.
Flexibility and convenience seems really key for blogs and other social networks to survive in this climate of rabid convergence. The ability to leave someone a voicemail via their blog is compelling, and a completely different functionality than Meebo.

We can’t view that page unless we’re logged in: can you paste the code here between backticks? Backticks are these `
Flexibility and convenience need to be weighed against security; that’s more of an issue here than at WordPress.org because we’re on a shared blogging platform. That means that any vulnerability introduced by any one of us becomes one shared by all of us. If you had a WordPress.org-powered blog hosted elsewhere, any vulnerabilities you introduce would only effect you. And when you’ve got 800,000 people sharing the guts of a blogging system, you don’t want to expose yourself to the risks the dumbest among them would take, do you?
If the code DOES now work with WordPress.com, then that’s great. If it doesn’t, I would expect the WP.com guys to wait until they were sure it was safe before they gave it approval.
-
Sorry… but I really don’t want to paste the recorder code into this page, because it includes my evoka user id in it… and one is limited to 60 minutes a month for the free service…. hence, I don’t want to release it into the wild…
However, there’s nothing stopping you from signing up for a free evoca.com account and poking around…
;)
Um… haven’t I summarized the situation clearly? Evoca.com thinks their code works at wordpress.com, and at least 2 people who’ve tried it (including me tonight) say that it doesn’t. Indeed… it appears that only the evoca flash player related code is stripped out.
If it’s true that evoca’s browser/flash based Mic plays well with typepad.com & blogger.com, wordpress.org, and myspace.com … then shouldn’t wordpress.com learn how to do the same?
There MUST be a way. Flash mp3 & video players are rampant on social networks. I’m no expert, but it seems to me that browser based (client side) interactivity is harmless compared to server side stuff.
Perhaps I should write a support ticket to Evoca.com and see if they make overtures to wordpress.com.

It may well work, but we have no way of knowing if the code is something that can be worked with or around because you refuse to paste the code. Just subtract your user information and put BLABLAH or whatever and then paste it in. All you’re telling us now is that you can’t get it to work, and this forum is chock-full of threads of things that CAN work, but people need help figuring out how.
The forum is also run by volunteers who really don’t have the time to register for everything everyone wants just on the off chance it could work. If you won’t grab the code you want so desperately, I at least am not going to go do it for you.
And yes, if the fault lies with Evoca, who claim it works with WP.com and it does not, then indeed you should take it up with them. Either their communication department or their coders need to fix something.
-
Ok… I just reported this “bug” to evoca.com via a support ticket, and asked them to try to put their heads together with blogger.com and learn to play well together… securely.
I’ve done my bit! Offf for some ZZzzzzzzz…

Much like other sites on the net. *cough* Technorati *cough*
“Oh, we’ll fix that now….” *snort*
Best bet would be to submit a feedback to wp.com and ask for support for this via a widget. That and ask evoca what they’re smoking. Must be some good *cough* :)

“Blogger.com? You said it already works fine with Blogger.

Sorry to “raincoaster” and everyone else.. it was 3am when I wrote this! It’s “wordpress.com” blogs, not “blogger.com” blogs that seemingly aren’t able to utilize evoca.com’s code for their player .

raincoaster – “disembedded” already pasted the evoca code on Feb 8. near the beginning of this not so long thread. Can’t you take the time to look at the top of the page?
I put in a support ticket to evoca right around 3am, and bothered to reveal all the information I know on this thread.
My hope was that someone who’d already found a solution to the problem, or otherwise grapped with it extensively enough to know something definative, would respond… or heck, maybe suggest another browser based mic/voicemail that IS compatible with wordpress.com’s blogs. I don’t expect anyone else to find the solution… unless they are intellectually curious or part of wordpress.com… in which case I’d think they’d be motivated.

crud… correction: … to utilize evoca.com’s code for their browser mic which emails voicemail for free to the pre-assigned account via an embedded flash object.

Hello,
Thank you all for your participation in this discussion. We have received the support ticket from terryart and have looked into this further. It seems, that indeed, wordpress.com blogs to in fact block the Flash code and disable the use of the EvocaMic. We have updated our documentation to reflect this. At this time, we support WordPress.org and TypePad blogs with custom plugins, and standard HTML code for Blogger and other social networking sites. It is unfortunate that wordpress.com blocks the Flash code, however, we wil look into this and try to find a solution. Thank you for the head’s up.
