Adding Favicons
-
Hi all,
Am new to WordPress (having spent a few years on Typepad and being a little bit babied) and am wondering how to insert a favicon into my site address bar. (www.alyndabear.com)
Please don’t just tell me to Google – I’ve done this, and I’ve worked most of it out on my own. The part I’m stuck at, is where to insert the code – it is in html and I only have a CSS option in my blog editor.
I’ve been perusing the support histories since last night and most topics mentioned a root directory or a php folder where you could insert html. I have absolutely no idea what these things are OR where to find them! Is there something I need to download to insert this code? Yikes.
Any help would be appreciated, as simply as possible would be excellent — I’m still getting used to things here!
Cheers,
Alynda

Bad news: you cannot insert a favicon for a WordPress.com blog. That demands the kind of access that we don’t have.
We share our blogging software, so if you were to be able to insert that favicon, it would probably get inserted for everyone using that template. Individual favicons have been requested from staff before, but as of right now they’re only available for VIP blogs.
Forget google: it will only give you answers for non-WP.com blogs. Do a search of these forums instead, as our answers are often unique.
You also don’t want to go posting your email in the forum. It’s routinely trolled by spammers. All replies to technical issues get posted here, so you dont’ need to put it up at all.

Hi Raincoaster,
Thanks for the reply – I’m sad to hear that. It’s just a bit confusing because I’ve seen support help for inserting favicons on these forums, as well as viewing other wordpress powered blogs with favicons that are on my reading list. Do you know how they added theirs in?
Thanks for the tip re: email. :)

If those sites are on WordPress.com and not WordPress.org, then they qualified for VIP Hosting – http://wordpress.com/vip-hosting/ where they can add whatever they want and do whatever they want with their blogs.

Ah, WordPress.org – what is the difference in domain hosting prices for there & WordPress.com? Are there huge differences with blogging here and there? I’d only ever heard of setting up domains through here. =)

Most blogs that say “powered by WordPress” are not hosted here. They sit in their own webspace and don’t share the software behind the blog with anyone, so they can have things like javascripts and Flash and such.
The requests for help inserting favicons in THIS forum have all led to blind alleys or instructions that don’t actually apply here, but to non-WP.com hosted blogs. If you find any instructions that actually apply here, I’d be glad to see them, as we get at least one thread a week asking for this. As far as I am aware, all WP.com hosted blogs with favicons are VIP blogs, and that starts at something like $250 per month.

I would host my own site if I knew how to but I’m not tech savy. So I stay here with my free blog where the techies handle all the problems. Just stay away from hosting through Yahoo, GoDaddy, and I think Dreamhost. Nothing but horror stories I hear.

WordPress.org doesn’t host blogs. You’ve got to find your own blog host and technical support, or you’ve got to know how to install and manage software yourself. They just supply the software for free download.
I’ve got a blog there and one here, and if you’ve got the money for hosting and you really, really want more flexibility than we’ve got here, then you should look into it. But you will have to do your own coding and database maintenance, or hire someone to do it.

No worries – am already hosted through the .com Automattic domain provider which seems fairly simple. Pain about the favicon though, had a great one picked out.
Thanks for your input, will mark this one resolved!

Hi all, so am I right in concluding once and for all, that through a standard wordpress account, with only a css upgrade, you cannot add a favicon?
Cheers

MMM.. excuse me, but since alyndabear has her own domain and I suppose she uses WP.com to automatically write new posts, couldn’t she simply edit the head of her homepage? The question is: when a new post is written on WP, the automatic updating on her domain creates a NEW head code? Then in this case she might use an FTP automatic updater of the only head part of her homepage. Or am I out of track?
