Adding Google Custom Search?

Can I add Google Custom Search to my blog?
The required code which must be installed looks like this:
https://cse.google.com/cse.js?cx=007921628383697261387:hk0mdefgbt2 <div class="gcse-search"></div>The built in WP search engine works fine for searching my site, no problem there.
I’m hoping to install Google search so I can create a method for users to search relevant article collections on other sites.
Thanks as always.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @nukeban, I don’t think we can embed that here, since that’s a JS file:
We do periodically work through some common requests for embeds, though, and while I can’t promise whether or when we could implement this, I can promise I’ll make your request for this known :)
Cheers!

Thank you for sending this request up the chain. An embed from Google seems pretty safe, so perhaps they will approve.
How about this? Could I host the js file on another host, and then add Google search to my site by using an iframe which would link to that file?
I’m trying to offer my visitors easy convenient access to lots of relevant articles on other sites. I thought about creating a database, or pages full of links, but adding a custom search feature would be enormously easier.

No, you will need a paid Business Plan to embed Javascript here, no matter where the Javascript is hosted.

Ah, thanks. I was going to ask that, but assumed the issue was security, and so the policy would apply to all plans. Thanks for correcting that impression.
So javascript on other people’s servers can affect security on your servers? How does that work? Is there a support doc somewhere which explains this issue in further detail? Is this a security issue, or a I’m not paying enough issue?
I’m sure you’re aware of all of this, but for the record here goes. I can solve all such problems, and add as many plugins as I want, and install any kind of software by anybody, including my own, by self hosting on another well respected host for $15 per month.
Not the “we want all the money upfront” scheme. Billed monthly.
FYI, I paid $50 per month at the last host without blinking, so the price isn’t the issue. $25 is a reasonable price for your Business plan. But the “we want all the money upfront” scheme doesn’t strike me as reasonable, as I’ve been paying monthly for 25 years without a problem.
I know many hosts have gone over to the yearly payment scheme, and it’s not just WP.com. But honestly, when I see yearly payment is the only option what I hear is, “We don’t really care if you host here or not. Give us all the money now or get lost.”
Ok, I am further informed, thanks for that. Not what I want to hear, but what I need to know, so that’s good.

Thank you for your feedback.
To give you some more information, WordPress.com is a shared environment and so we do not allow installing third-party themes, plugins or adding some custom code for security reasons.
However, the sites on Business plan undergo a series of structural changes behind the scenes. Those sites behave very much like self-hosted WordPress sites but with all the advantages of WordPress.com.Here’s a little more about that:

Thanks for that link, that helps explain your policy. Appreciated. I’m happy to give you guys an A+ for support and docs.
Here’s a few possible solutions:
1) Code from Google is presumably safe, so perhaps Google Custom Search might be approved?
2) If you’ll bill me monthly instead of yearly, I’ll upgrade to Business now. If you’d prefer to do this privately and have me keep quiet about it, agreed.
3) The purpose of my site is to save the world. :-) I make no money from it. If you’d like to upgrade me to Business at the price I’m currently paying, I’ll agree to keep paying yearly, and we could save the world together. As this coronavirus mess illustrates, really big really bad things really can happen.
I like #3 a lot, as you guys would make a great partner. Ok, ok, so I’m probably not going to save the world myself :-) but if WordPress decided to confront the biggest threat facing humanity, you guys could make a huge difference. So, another option…
4) Buy my site, hire me, add your own ideas and resources, and the site becomes the widely advertised WordPress.com Project To Save The World. Why be just a hosting company when you could be heroes?
Seriously. It’s only a matter of time until the next nuclear detonation, and when that happens nuclear weapons will instantly become the only thing on the planet anyone is talking about. If WordPress.com is far sighted enough, you could be there already on the job when the time comes ready, willing and able to serve the tidal wave of terrified traffic.
5) If this is the nuttiest support request you’ve ever received, I should at least get a gold star or pat on the head or something! :-)
