Adding HTML conditional comments
-
Hi there!
I’d like to add HTML conditional comments to my pages in order to account for Internet Explorer CSS support, but it seems that HTML comments (conditional and non-conditional) are all converted to paragraph (<p>) elements when hitting the “Publish/Update” button.
Does anyone know how I could add HTML comments to my WordPress.com pages?
Thank you very much for your help. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi lettergrade!
Thanks a lot for your answer. Would you know by any chance how to add Internet Explorer support without using HTML conditional comments?
I am using a custom CSS, maybe there’s a way of adding IE support through my CSS file?
Thanks very much. -
Hmm, I don’t know any methods that don’t involve some page-side commenting or conditionals. Anyone else?
You may get more answers if you start a new css forum topic with a more descriptive title, though, especially if you have a specific css issue you want to solve for IE. Good luck!

Hi again lettergrade and thanks for your advice. I actually posted a topic about CSS and IE support about a month ago but I have received no feedback so far.
I’ll try again by rephrasing my question. Thanks for your advise.
Yet it would be good to know more about how conditional comments can be handled within WordPress.com.
Thanks for your insights. -

To select a theme that is designed to provide some HTML in comments see here please:
Comments: allowed HTML (1) http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/05/10/html-allowed-in-comments-1/
Comments: allowed HTML (2) http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/05/23/html-allowed-in-comments-2/ -
Actually, @timethief, it’s not about comments: he’s looking to incorporate IE-friendly html commenting in text he enters in the html editor for posts, but it gets stripped out. Do you have any ideas in your (possibly-limitless ;) mental archive of questions and issues?

IE is supported in the CSS – not all versions, but the later ones should be OK – so you should not need special code just for IE – and as @TT noted – I don’t think you can do conditional CSS on a per Post basis

Hi everyone and thanks a lot for your answers.
Thanks to auxclass also for clearing my questions out ^^
I created a more specific topic for my problem:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/keyframe-animations-and-background-images-workaround-for-ie?replies=1
I know HTML conditional comments are a workaround, and that’s why I created this topic here, but maybe looking into the problem itself might bring up some more answers.
Hope either way I’ll find a solution ^^
Thanks again guys and girls (and I’m a “she” btw lettergrade ;-) ) -

Right so it seems what we have here is a duplicate thread on the same issue found in this thread > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/keyframe-animations-and-background-images-workaround-for-ie?replies=1

Hi timethief,
It’s not a duplicate thread, it’s a complementary thread.
I’d like to know about HTML comments besides my CSS-IE-compatibility problem.
If you have an answer to either one of my questions, please do so, provide an answer ^^
And if not, please leave some space for the ones who want to provide answers ^^ -
Whatever term suits you is fine with me. I know most Staff are away until October 10th and that there are few Volunteers who provide any CSS assistance. I also know that when they return they will address the threads with the earliest date stamps and timestamps like https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/keyframe-animations-and-background-images-workaround-for-ie?replies=1 first and then work their way forward to the threads with the most recent date stamps and timestamps.

oops! I reversed the two URLs

WordPress does not support any IE browser versions earlier than IE8. The supported browser versions are those found here http://browsehappy.com

Goodbye, IE6
With this update, WordPress has discontinued support for Internet Explorer 6. It has required increasingly complex code trickery to make the WordPress dashboard work in the IE6 browser, which was introduced 10 years ago and does not support current web standards. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2011/05/19/just-write/Hope this information helps.

Hi Timethief, I think you are confused about IE support.
The post you mention says (in my own interpretation) “if you want to write your WP blog using IE, you won’t be able to use IE 6 or below” (but you can of course use a later version of IE like IE 7+, or another browser).
My question here regarding IE support is different. It is not about writing your blog in IE but reading your blog in IE (your posts, your pages, your website, this can be anyone, not necessarily a WP user).
I hope it is clear for you know. And thanks for the Staff’s vacation timespan, I hope they get back soon and with plenty of energy!! :-D

Hi Judit – Timethief is correct that we do not support IE6 (whether writing in IE6 or how things display when viewed in IE6). We support IE9 and above. It’s possible that the CSS folks will have some suggestions for you in your other thread, though. :)
