adding images at the sidebar

  i need help in trying to add an image/small banner at the sidebar of my webbie…does this mean i hav to do my own CSS in order to be able to do this? i have trie reading thru the forum & the support but i ended up getting more confuse :( can someone pls help to direct me to freshen up my mind?
