Adding images to a gallery page

  • Unknown's avatar

I have created a basic web page to display images of artwork. The gallery page I made only lets me add the images in a vertical column. I want to have images in rows across the page. How do I do that. Also should I be able to search the page I’ve created on google?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!
https://wordpress.com/theme/shoreditch iss the homepage for your theme. Near the bottom it says

Columns (recommended for advanced users only)

Two special CSS classes are available to create a two-column or three-column area within a post or page:

    column-1-2 and column-1-3 (plus column-first and column-last)

You will need to use the HTML Editor to create your columns. We recommend not switching back and forth between the Visual and HTML Editor once you start creating columns.

    And

See live examples on Shoreditch‘s demo site.

You might be happier with a different theme, there are several that support galleries without extensive alteration.

    best,
    dave

    Hello again
And while looking for something else, i found
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/
Which means you do not need to change themes!

@thurstonhowelliv – All themes support the Gallery feature as presented in this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/ You do not need to use the “for advanced users only” CSS classes that @dave2swords mentioned in order to display a Gallery.

For example, the Shoreditch demo site displays a Gallery in this Post https://shoreditchdemo.wordpress.com/2016/03/10/clothing-store/

If you want to display a Gallery on a page instead, you can also opt for Shoreditche’s full-width page template.

Come back to me if you have any questions about using the Gallery feature. I have some experience with it.

The other option is to use the Portfolio, as @dave2swords mentioned, but it is an entirely different beast.

Indeed, i did not mean to frighten you with the CSS classes, they are not necessary for a basic page, but might be a fun exercise if you feel up to it.

And yes, @justjennifer is right, you can do a gallery in your theme as the demo indecates

they are not necessary for a basic page, but might be a fun exercise if you feel up to it

and are not needed if what you are trying to do is create a Gallery or Portfolio. There are much simpler ways to do that (relatively speaking).

I have two words for you Dave and Jennifer – thank you. I’ll give your suggestions a crack and let you know how I go.

    Justjennifer,
I tried adding a gallery page via the blogpost as per the example. I can add images but in my case when I choose upload there are no options for payout offered. Not sure what I’m doing incorrectly. Also the gallery page I have isnt listed in the menu of pages I have created.

Sorry – that should options for layout not payout.

Hello again, You don’t say where you are creating your post/page and uploading your images. There are two “options” here: either the Calypso/New Editor or the WP Admin/Classic Editor.

In the Calypso Editor, when you are creating a new post or page, after you click the “Add Media” button and then the “Add New” button to upload your images, once all the images are uploaded they should all be automatically selected for you. Clicking the “Continue” button should bring you to a new screen where those images are previewed in the “tiled mosaic” style of Gallery. On the right side of the images, you’ll see layout options for the Gallery. After making your choices, click the “Insert” button to place the Gallery in your post or page.

In the WP Admin Editor, the process is similar but different. :) Click the “Add Media” button and upload your images. When they are done uploading, they will be selected for you, but in order to create a Gallery, you need to click the link on the left side of the images, where it says “create Gallery.” (You can also click that link first and then upload/select your Gallery images.) Click the “Create a new Gallery” button” which will take you to a new screen where you can select your Gallery options and then click the “Insert Gallery” button to add your Gallery in your post or page.

Regardless of which screen you are creating your Gallery in, when you insert the Galley in your post or page, the default thumbnail Gallery will appear in the Editor. If you want to see the Gallery style itself, you’ll need to preview the post/page.

The biggest difference between the two methods (Calypso/WP Admin) is that Calypso Add Media screen has a preview of your Gallery style, whereas the WP Admin does not.

If the above is not happening for you, please take a screenshot of what you see after you upload your images and click “create Gallery.” https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ and share the link to the screenshot here.

Also let us know what browser and OS you are using.

My activity in the forums is limited this week, so please excuse the length of time before I reply.

    Hi again,
I think I have it now. It looks like I have the Calypso editor. I have the gallery behaving as I want. Next question is how do I get rid of the Text Widget information on the title page? All I’m trying to publish is the title page, a contact form, an about/information page and a gallery.

    Go to https://wordpress.com/customize/forbiddentiki.wordpress.com/
Click the Widgets link on the left hand side and delete it.

Or go to http://forbiddentiki.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php and delete it there.

timethief – by George I think I’ve got it!

One final thing I can’t seem to change. On my contact me page the contact form keeps adding my contact details to the boxes. As many times as I delete my details to leave the boxes empty, and save my change, WordPress puts my details back in.???

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello again, That only happens when you are logged in and viewing a contact page. I see my details in the contact form when I visit that page. WordPressdotcom fills out that information as a timesaver for any logged in user. You can test this by logging out or viewing your contact page in a private browsing window.

OK, thanks for that advice. I tested it as you suggested and it works properly.

    Thanks
    THIV
