Adding images to galleries in new editor is chancy

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been building galleries in my image heavy site, and I’ve found that setting them up can be a bit frustrating.

For a long time I tried dragging images into a gallery only to have them disappear on save. Then I checked the media file and found several copies of them, as I had tried to add the same image multiple times. I had to clean them out.

Then I would have everything set up perfectly, so I thought, only to check the actual web page and see several galleries had not “taken”: they were non-existent.

After a while, I concluded that the only way to safely add images to a gallery is to not use the drag method but to add the images by uploading to the media file and adding them from there..

Also, I could not add an image to an already existing gallery; it would go into a new box. I concluded that I had start a new gallery, deleting the old one, to add the new image together with the existing ones.

Adding captions so that they would appear not only on the page as part of the image but also when viewing the slideshow was also problematic, but I’m getting the hang of it.

The page I am working on is https://nbstearmans.com/timeline-of-stearmans-in-new-brunswick-and-other-provinces-1952-to-1973/1955-2/

  • Hi there,

What you’re describing might have to do with your browser configuration. Can you please try the following?

    * Clear your browser’s cache and cookies:

    Solve Common Browser Issues

    * Check that JavaScript is enabled and supported by your browser:

    http://enable-javascript.com/

    * Disable any ad-blocking and security extensions on your browser

    * Check that you’re using the latest version of your browser:

    * Try another browser:

If all of the above doesn’t work or you have more questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

    Hi fstat,

I tried 3 of the above (not a new browser): cleared the cache but not cookies, java is installed and the latest browser in Firefox 64.0 (64-bit). Could that last be the problem, 64-bit?

Yesterday I had everything set up, and all was present and accounted for. This morning, without having done anything, I went into edit to add some captions, and found big grey boxes inviting me to add images to a gallery at the location of the now missing galleries: 10 galleries in all (2 to 6 images each)!

Four other galleries were fine, as were several single images. I checked the page in view and on the actual website, and in both places, the galleries were actually missing.

I’m leaving it along so you can have a look. TIA.

  • Hi there,

So you’re using the block editor? Then this sounds like a bug – in the My Site version of the block editor, adding multiple tiled gallery blocks to a post or page causes images to appear from existing gallery blocks. Does that sound like what you’re experiencing?

If so, we’re already aware of this and working on fixing it. It also should not happen in the block editor in WP-Admin, so if you edit/create your posts from there for now it should be okay – the problem is only with the My Site interface as far as we’ve been able to determine.

No, images are not appearing in one block from another. It’s just that I set up a block, and it disappears, as if it wasn’t saved.

Also, what do you mean about the my Sites version of the block editor? That’s the only way I know of to get to the edit page. I use My sites > switch site > click on my other site > view site > visit site > go to the page > click edit.

    Is there another way?

Could you please grab a screenshot of what you’re seeing to better troubleshoot it?

Yes, the classic WordPress dashboard for managing your site. Here’s a direct link to your post:

Can you please try editing a post there as @kokkieh suggested and let us know if you encounter the same issue?

I will try the more direct way soon. Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing. The gallery boxed are there but show no content.

  • Sorry, that didn’t make it to the post; could you upload it via your media library? We can find it there.

    Thanks in advance for that.

And about whether you are using the block editor: it’s the “new editor” option you’ve likely seen.

We actually have that and a classic editor, for both wp-admin and Calypso. A little confusing right now, but if we know which one you prefer and are using, we can try to duplicate the issue and file a bug if needed.

I just edited my page through WP admin, as suggested above. I re-added several galleries using the media library, and saved everything. The process seemed straight-forward and without problem. BUT, when I opened the website after signing out, the galleries were gone!

  • We’ve reported this issue and noted it for our developers. Feel free to follow along at https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/30104

  • Hi there,

This issue should be fixed now, but please let us know if you’re still seeing any issues with galleries in the block editor.
