adding links to gallery images

Hello, I want to create a portfolio with images that link to other websites that feature articles I’ve written. I like the look of the thumbnail gallery, but the gallery won’t let me add individual URLs to the images.
I’ve tried adding individual thumbnails which link to their own URL and placing them left, right and centre, but they end up staggered, not side by side in a row.
How can I create this look for my portfolio, with each image able to have its own link? Not sure what the ‘portfolio’ option for wordpress I have read about does exactly…I want to have mine as its own page, featured along with the other pages on the header.

This can’t be done directly using the Gallery feature. Gallery thumbnails can link only to the Photo Carousel, an image Attachment page, or the Media file directly. I’ve posted 2 workarounds on my Gallery demo site. You can find them here:
