Adding media to Gallery – UI changed (?)

This is quite hard to explain, in part because I’ve done it for years on autopilot but now there’s a change in the UI that makes things incredibly clunky.
While creating/editing a blog post, I used to elect to add a Gallery Block -> Select Images -> Media Library.
This used to take me to a dialog where there was a button to “Add Media”. The dialog I’m presented with now is different, and I have to click on the “Upload Files” tab, click to add images, then confirm I’m adding them to a gallery, before I end up back on the first dialog again.
There’s two issues with this for me :
a) It’s a lot more overhead with mouse clicks to get such images into my blog
b) With this new dialog, chrome hangs on the second attempt to upload any files, consistently.I didn’t have this change in the UI until today, I have no idea what has caused the switch.

Hi,
I have taken a look at my own site for this and the choices I get by clicking on Gallery block are: upload (blue button) and Select images, by clicking on select images get a dropdown menu where I can choose the media library.
Do you get the same?

That’s exactly what I used to get, but don’t any more !!
I have no idea why the behaviour has suddenly switched. It’s the same behaviour on Chrome and IE

Thanks. My blog uses images heavily, the way the UI is now is incredibly frustrating. I just don’t understand how/why it has suddenly changed.
Hopefully someone can help me get this resolved.

Just to make sure we’re on the same page here, I went into your post draft titled “test” and made some screenshots of the gallery block to make sure you are seeing the same thing I am. The links below are screenshots of what I see.
1. Gallery Block -> Select Images -> Media Library: https://d.pr/i/6MgmhD

4. Clicking “Create a new gallery” then takes you to the Edit Gallery screen where you can reorder and caption your gallery items. https://d.pr/i/8BZD9Z
5. Clicking “Insert gallery” takes you back to the block editor: https://d.pr/i/ihFfVmI’ve left the gallery I added intact in case you wanted to see if it looks the same for you, otherwise feel free to delete those two kitten photos I uploaded to your media library.
Is that the same thing you see or are your screens different? If they’re different, please take a screenshot of what you see. If you’re not familiar on how to take a screenshot, this support document will help explain how to make one:
Then, use a service like Snipboard.io to upload the screenshot and then share the image link from that service here and we’ll take a closer look.

Yes, that’s what I see now, but is NOT the UI I had yesterday or for a good couple of years at least.
Where is that blue “add media” button that was referenced earlier in the thread. The workflow now is so cumbersome compared to before.

I have to admit I am a bit confused, as I see that when you add a new Gallery block to a page, I am presented with the same two options (Upload or Select Images) as well. You see them when you add first add the gallery block, yes?
I recorded a videos to show you what I see which you can view here. Granted it says “Upload” and not “Add Media” but the function is the same; it allows you to upload images that are not already in your media library.
Is it the case that you are seeing something different than what @franxiscoflorestestsites and I both see?
I also wanted to add that you can upload images in most cases by dragging them from your computer into the popup window. Here is a video of how I normally do that: https://d.pr/v/GizJBE
This allows you to create a gallery that is a mix of images you are uploading and images you have already uploaded to your media library, all from the same screen.

Thanks for taking the time to look into this, and for the videos, but none of this has really progressed things.
I’ve noticed other changes in my UI – for example, when electing to Preview changes, this used to invoke a new browser tab where you could choose Desktop, Tablet or Phone. Now it renders the previews within the edit session. So something, somewhere has changed all of this, I’m wondering if somehow I was stuck with a slightly earlier version of the editing UI (goodness knows how) – could some weird browser cookies have done this ?
I still have an issue even with the new UI, in that if I go through a couple of rounds of adding images to different galleries within a blog, it will hang when uploading my selections from the file system. Nothing I do can get it working, other than to close off the edit, invoke a new edit session, and resume. When adding 10 small galleries to a blog post, this becomes a complete pain.
I’m not sure what is causing this behaviour, it’s almost as if my gallery upload is using a connection that is then not released, so subsequent attempts have no available connections to make (if that makes sense), I wonder if anyone else has experienced similar issues when uploading galleries ?
Anyway, I’m resigned at the moment to having to use the changed UI, which would be acceptable if only I didn’t have the hanging uploads.

You should be seeing an “preview in a new browser option” – are you seeing this when clicking preview?

What browser are you using exactly?
Are you using any browser extensions – for example browser extensions?

Yes, I see that. My point was this is another example where the UI has suddenly changed for me in the last few days, and seemingly nobody can tell me exactly why that is !
The issue with hanging uploads is on Chrome and Edge, I deleted any extensions a long time back in an attempt to fix this.
