Adding my blog to Google Search

    @lumpsolo
    Did you know that typing in all capital letters in cyberspace is considered to be the rude equivalent of shouting into people’s faces? It’s best not to do it.

    Hi there, gonna toss in my two cents and hope that it helps out a bit.

    I started my blog here just a week ago and after just checking found that I am # 9 on page one when I did a google search. I didn’t have to do anything more than blog to end up there but here is what I found to be very helpful.

    1. I blog daily and usually 2 or 3 entries.
    2. I sent out a notice to all my friends and family with a link to my blog.
    3. I take the time to read others blogs here and leave comments.
    4. I use “tags” on everything.
    5. I find other blogging sites that will allow me to invite other to read my blog here.

    It must have worked because like I said…there I am at # 9.

    Give it a try and see what happens, you got nothing to loose, right? Best of luck.

    Tfocklr im not sure if you talking to me but if you are 1st thanks! and second what do you mean by “tags”?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Long, I wasn’t speaking to you in particular but thats ok, I am glad I could help you anyway.

    Tags are “key words” that you attach to your blog or home page. Usually single words that discribe the content.

    Example: If I write a blog about my kids I might use the tags: family, kids, home, new, blog, humor, funny, children, life.

    What this does is this. When someone logs into google they usually type a set of word or a question into the “search bar” to find what they are looking for. If any of the “tags” I used on my blog are in their words or question then my blog will be show as a possible match for them.

    Example: You type into Google search bar….Where can I find funny stories about kids and life.

    In this example the words, funny, kids and life would all trigger Google to show my blog.

    To “tag” a post here if you look on your “new post page” to the right you will see a place where you can add tags. Type in single words and click ADD. Each time you blog add “tags” (the ones you have already added remain by the way) so you can use them over and over again.

    Just keep in mind that you don’t want to go TAG HAPPY as Google will drop you if you have more than 12 usually. So think carefully about the tags you want and keep them as relavant as possible and before you know it you should end up on Google.

    Best of luck. hope I explained this well enough.

    Time, not trying to rock your boat, but I have a question about what you just posted.

    Why do you need a google webmaster account?

    The reason I ask is that I never bothered to create one yet I have had no problem in getting Google to find my blog in less than a week so I am curious if there is something I have missed.

  • Unknown's avatar

    If you don’t want to verify ownership of your site you don’t have to. On average it takes about 4 -6 weeks to appear in search results, all other things being equal.

    If you don’t want a free Google webmaster’s account you don’t have to register for one. Not doing so is a choice not to access important information pertaining to your site that helps you improve your site’s visibility in Google search results.

    Discussion of tagging is off-topic in this thread. Please read these entries in the support documentation:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-tags/

    Categories vs. Tags

  • Unknown's avatar

    @longislandwx
    External search engines “see” tags and categories as being the same thing. Categories are like the Chapter titles on a Table of Contents of a book. Tags are like the index terms that are found in the back pages of a book. Both are based on keywords or keyword phrases that naturally occur in any written language. Potential readers type keywords categories/ tags into search engines in order to find blogs and posts of interest to them.

    Whenever you get confused about categories and tags pretend you are in a library looking for a book on a specific topic. Ask yourself this: What words would I use to find the correct book on that topic in that library catalog?

    Change the word “book” to blog and you will know how to find a blog on any specific topic by typing keywords into a search engine and getting back the results.

    When you assign a minimal number of categories and tags to a post you are selecting the keywords that you think other people would type into a search engine and find your blog with. They are important index terms used for retrieval of search engine indexing information. Choose them carefully and do not overuse them.

    Does buying your own domain from wordpress help it come up on Google faster?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @longislandwx
    No. You can’t buy you way into having your site indexed. The purchase of a domain name changes nothing. You either are a skilled blogger who uses basic SEO elements, including the appropriate use of relevant tags or you aren’t.

    Also note this support documentation as some people just don’t get it. When you purchase a domain mapping upgrade that’s exactly what you get and nothing else.

    The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes and plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and must still abide by our Terms of Service accordingly. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

    I have a question… I just started blogging this week, and I realize of course that it takes a while for a search engine to “pick you up” I registered my site with google. But what I was wondering was this – if i type the heading to one of my posts verbatim, with quotes and everything, google shows “no search results.” Is that normal?

  • Unknown's avatar

    (1) Search string format
    The use of quotation marks is not the correct format for a Google search this is >
    site:effortlesslyintricate.wordpress.com/

    Notice there is no space following the colon. Notice also that the http:// is not included in the search string. Note that no wordpress.com blogs have “www” in their URLs.

    (2) google shows “no search results.” Is that normal?
    Yes. It’s normal. It takes 4 – 6 weeks for your posts to be indexed and appear in search results. See the results on your blog here > http://ismyblogworking.com/effortlesslyintricate.com

    (3) There are some factors that expedite the indexing process. See >
