Adding new domain name (Hostgator)

  • Unknown's avatar

I set up a free WordPress site, then afterwards decided to get a Hostgator domain name. When I try to log in using the new domain name + user name and password, I get an installation error – ‘Installation Failed’ ‘Error Details – Installation directory in not empty. Please install to an empty location’ – how can I fix this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Do you want to use the domain with your site here on WordPress.com? To do that you’ll need to add a paid plan to your WordPress.com site under My Site ->Plans, and then add the domain mapping upgrade to connect the domain to your WordPress.com site:

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

If you want to use the domain with a self-hosted WordPress site on Hostgator’s servers, you need to install the free WordPress software there, and then connect the domain to that site. For help with doing that you’ll need to contact Hostgator’s support instead.

    Hi Jenny,

My name is Jonathan and I’m a part of HostGator’s customer service team. The error you are describing means that our WordPress auto-installer doesn’t want to overwrite any files that are already in the account.

The fix for this issue is to either move the files on the account to a new directory, or delete them. If you have any trouble with this process, we’d be glad to take a look with you if you could please start a live chat at https://chat.hostgator.com or give us a call at 1.866.96.GATOR.

If you have any trouble receiving assistance, please provide us with your domain name and we’ll be glad to follow up with you directly.

  • Thanks for pitching in, Jonathan :)
