Adding new featured content won't appear until I go into customization mode.

When I write a new post and add the Featured tag it won’t actually appear as a Featured until I go into the customization screen or until I wait over an hour. It’s a huge inconvenience so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I cannot recreate the problem you’re experiencing in a test site, so in order for me to witness the issue, I need you to create a screencast for me. This will create a video I can watch so I can determine the cause of the trouble. If your computer doesn’t already have a screencast tool, you can use this free online application: https://www.screenr.com/
The screencast application will tell you how you can send me a link/copy of the video so I can take a look.
Just create a post as you normally would, add the featured tag, click Publish, then open your site in the browser window. If you don’t see the new post in the grid, please show me the process you take to force the image to display.
Before you do this, however, please check one thing: The featured image grid will only display six featured images. If the post you are saving is the 7th featured post, could you make sure that you first remove the “featured” tag from whichever post you want removed from the grid? Let me know if this helps.
