My understanding is the gravatar images are square – so probably ought to be same dimensions eg 2600×2600 … Also 2600 is quite a wide image for a gravatar, this link – http://blog.gravatar.com/2012/07/30/retina/ indicates that the maximum width is 2048.
So I’d suggest resizing the image to a maximum of 2048×2048. And then try uploading again.
Hope this helps

Thanks. I’m giving it a try in a sec. This is my first day on word press, and I’m lost in the woods….. and the words for how to do things!

That’s a ridiculously large image file and I strongly suggest you do not waste your free media storage space. Instead I instead to get the best image quality you ought to optimize and pre-size all images to fit where they will be displayed prior to uploading them. For help with free ways to do that see here Cropper or Proper Image Preparation?
Gravatars/blavatars (favicons) do not show up instantly after uploading them. Gravatar images are cached and frequently take several days to display after a change.
Dashboard → Settings → General
Do not keep uploading!
Do not forget to select an image rating.See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/avatars/blavatars/

Got the gravatar image posted…. thanks for all the help. The instructions said to upload the best image of any size, so that’s what I did at first. Obviously, not a good idea. Thanks for the virtual village.
