I’ve been downloading images for 2+ years. All of a sudden, regardless of the method I’ve tried, they start to download and then “crunching” appears and nothing happens for hours. occasionally a red error box appears. Can you help?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy,
What does the error message say? Is this happening all any image you try (for example, one that worked before)?
Lastly, have you tried using a different browser on your computer?
Thanks for your patience. I’d like to isolate where the problem is occurring. We’re not having a system-wide issue, so it is likely either the image itself, your browser, or your Internet connection, so I’d like to get some clarity.
Cheers!

Thanks for your prompt response.
1. The error message says, “An error occurred on the upload. Please try again later.”
2. I am unable to download images I have downloaded in the past or different new ones from the ones that first made me realize the problem. Download size has always been less than 1GB, usually much less. The files are all jpg.
3. I have rebooted the cable modem and the router. Everything else on the network and everything else on my computer seems to be working just fine.
4. My usual browser is Microsoft Explorer. I have tried Mozilla Firefox, and the response is even worse: The upload screen doesn’t even permit me to access images in the multiple file mode. In the browser mode, it will start to load a single image but then the activity spinner just spins for many, many minutes.
5. I am able to enter and save text with no problems.

Thanks for the point-by-point. That’s very helpful.
Can you perform a traceroute for me? The instructions are online at Advanced Browser Troubleshooting.
Since it is happening on other browsers too, I’d like to confirm nothing is amiss between your Internet connection and our servers.
Thanks!

Thanks for your patience. Everything looks good there and we haven’t had any other issues reported by Comcast users. Reading back over our responses, can you try to clear the cache in Internet Explorer using the instructions at http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser%27s-Cache#steps_6 ?
In the meantime, I’m going to ask for some second opinions around here. Thanks again.
-
I have cleared the browser cache according to your directions and tried to upload files again. Using the batch loader, 7 files all got to the step with the blue bar, but they all had the legend, “crunching”. I let them sit unattended for one hour with no further activity. I tried the browser down load and the spinner on the wordpress bar spun for about 15 seconds and then quit. Even after waiting several minutes, nothing more happened. I tried to load to the gallery as part of a post edit, both singly and in a batch and got the same error message as above.
Right now I have 4.1 GB filled of a 13 GB storage capacity, but that is a lot of images. Do you think that deleting any of those images might help the situation?
-
You shouldn’t need to delete anything. Let me confer with folks here, since I’m drawing a blank on what the cause could be.
Thanks for your patience again.

Howdy again,
This is causing a number of us to scratch our heads, so I very much appreciate your patience. The error message is a generic one that could have a few causes, but we’ve already eliminated the common ones.
I’m going to ask you to download and try on Google Chrome ( http://google.com/chrome/ ) as one last check.
If it fails on there as well, I’ll record a video of step-by-step instructions on how to troubleshoot further.
Thanks again.

Downloaded Chrome, used my Gmail account and tried WordPress with same result.
This time got a new error message:
The webpage at http://fromthefamilytable.wordpress.com/wp-admin/media-new.php might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
Error code: ERR_CONNECTION_ABORTED -
Did you try a couple of times in Chrome to see if it is a permanent or temporary issue?
From that, along with the majority of the troubleshooting we’ve done, indicates that something is having a connection issue between your home and our servers.
Can you visit:
http://luv.wordpress.com
http://sat.wordpress.com
http://iad.wordpress.com
?Do all three bring up an “empty” WordPress.com site for you? Those can help us determine if there is a specific datacenter of ours that you’re not able to connect to properly.
Thanks again for your patience.

I tried the three sites as you suggested, and they all worked. In the meantime I think I have solved the problem – sort of – My NETGEAR N750 router seemed to be working beautifully, but I decided to try out an old router – NETGEAR RangeMax, and I was able to upload the images, put them in the blog and post it, including a tribute to all of you at Word Press who worked so hard on the problem. Now I just need to find out what the problem with the router might be.
Thanks very much for your help.

Wow! That’s great to hear.
My first guess would be to try checking out the Security section (Chapter 7) of the router’s manual at http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/DGND4000/DGND4000_UM_01March2013.pdf
Without seeing anything, that is the first area I would check out personally.
Cheers!
