Adding new users

I am the admin for the above blog, but want to add another user with author capabilities.
When the ‘add user’ email is sent, the recipient can’t just click the invite to accept it as the link takes them to a WordPress login, but at that point they don’t have a login password, only an email address. As an admin I can’t see that I can set them up with a password either?
I don’t understand how this works. Why can’t the user just accept the invite and get sent login details?
