Hi there,
To Appearance? That’s not where one creates a new Page. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/Here’s a link to the learn wordpress.com tutorial which is also linked to on the bottom of your Admin page. http://learn.wordpress.com
Note that support documentation links which is also found on the bottom of your Admin page is http://en.support.wordpress.com
regarding the the 404 (page not found) error message http://en.support.wordpress.com/not-found/ on your front page — it was caused by you deleting the Hello World placeholder post. As soon as you publish a post, not a page http://http//en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ it will disappear.

actually, I know how to add pages, I want to be able to see them as tabs in my blog…like a menu bar
-
Troubleshooting – My custom menu isn’t appearing
Go to the custom menu page in the dashboard Apearance > Menus and in the “theme location” module at upper left select your custom menu from the pulldown and then click “save”.Troubleshooting – My Pages aren’t appearing in my custom menu
They must be public pages – not private.
Public – The page will be visible to everyone.
Protected – The page is protected with a password you set. Only people who have the password can view a protected page.
Private – Pages are only visible to blog Editors and Administrators. Private pages are not visible in Blog Surfer, feeds, or in any search. A page can be private without being password protected. -
Here’s a link to a custom menu walkthrough > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/08/11/wordpress-com-custom-menu-walk-through/
There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

I am using a theme called “fresh and clean,” which could very well have tabbed headers. I will do some more exploring, thank you all for your comments and help.

Fresh and Clean theme description > http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/fresh-and-clean/
Fresh and Clean live demo site > http://freshandcleandemo.wordpress.com/The post slider appears on the front page if and only if you set featured images of the size required by the theme and mark them as sticky posts. Featured Image at least 840 pixels wide.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/#setting-a-featured-image
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-postsThe post slider on the Fresh and Clean theme is not designed to automatically advance. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/post-slider/
The Fresh and Clean theme is designed to display excerpts only on the front page and there is a workaround you can use to override that. The theme has an active excerpt box below the editor. In any theme with an active excerpt box you can use this workaround. You compose your whole post first and before you publish it you switch to the HTML (Text) editor, copy the code, paste it into the Excerpt box, and publish the post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/excerpts/#creating-excerpts
If you do not see an excerpt box then go to screen options on the top right hand corner of your post editor screen and include:
Post – Likes and Shares, Format*, Categories, Tags, Excerpt, Send Trackbacks, Discussion, Comments**, Slug, Author, Revisions, Writing HelperP.S. On themes that do have an active excerpt function, the workaround works very well but you have to do it on every post you create.

paulaannm said Pages not Posts and I took him at his word. He won’t be back until tomorrow. I won’t be around much due to medical appt’s so I supplied my experience of working with Fresh and Clean.

Thank you for the information, “timethief.”
My last question is, if I publish with password only, would that work then?
to explain, this blog is for a senior capstone project and I hoped to get it completed before publishing! I have most of the information entered on posts and pages.
Thank you so much “timethief” and “raincoaster.”
