Adding pictures to my blog

How do I go about adding images to my blog- I understand how to upload ect- but I wanted to try and make the nice layouts and collages of images like i see on so many blogs. I also want to learn how to insert the image and then make sure i reference it correcly and link it back to where i got it from. I keep inserting images and I get one in but it doesnt look as nice as some of the layouts i see other people use. I am on a mac and new to it, so even copying and pasting takes time for me, but i have such a hard time just inserting pictures and their link and still having it look stylish, please let me know any tips tricks or programs that help.
