Adding Plugins

  • Unknown's avatar

    Good Morning,

I have my own self-hosted site: http://www.cathryntoenyes.com, through WordPress and want to add a plugin to it. I’m seeing all over the internet, including YouTube videos, which show how you can add plugins to a WordPress site. However, I do not have that option on my dashboard. Is there a way I can add the plugin option to my dashboard? I purchased a plugin and would like to use it on my site. Any help is much appreciated!

    Thank you for your help,
    Cathryn

    Hi Cathryn!

The site cathryntoenyes.com is currently a WordPress.com site, not a self-hosted site. As a result, you will not be able to add a plugin without moving to a self-hosted site. That would require setting up hosting elsewhere and transferring your content:

Can you let me know what the plugin does? Happy to try to find a way for you to do this at WordPress.com without a plugin!

Ok, that’s right. I remember now that this site is not currently sell-hosted. That’s too bad..

The plug in I purchased is a new them/web design that I absolutely fell in love with and would like to make it apart of my current design for my online portfolio. And since I purchased the design, I would like to be able to use it.

Understood. You will not be able to use the plugin with WordPress.com. If you would like, you can move your site to a self-hosted platform following the steps here:

If there’s anything else I can help with at WordPress.com though, let me know!

    Good Evening,

So, I decided to go ahead and move my domain to another host in order for me to self-host my website. I was told that if I went ahead and did this, that I would have the option, on my sidebar for plugins. I have gone through the entire process of moving my website to a different host and I still do not have the option in my dashboard sidebar for Plugins. I’m not sure what went wrong but I need help. I purchased a theme that I wanted for my personal portfolio and cannot use it, even though I went through all the necessary steps in order to have plugins as an option on my WordPress site.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thank you,
    Cathryn

Also, why don’t I have the “Install Themes” option under Appearance > Themes > Install Themes? I don’t even have a “Manage Themes” option.

    Thank you,
    Cathryn

    Hi,

I just wanted to check in to see if my recent support question had been looked at, regarding plugins not showing up on my recently transferred, self-hosted website? As well as the Install Themes option not showing up?

    Thank you,
    Cathryn

http://cathryntoenyes.com/ still points to your WordPress.com site, so the restrictions for WordPress.com sites still apply. What is the URL for your new WordPress site? When you edit that site you will see the options for installing themes and plugins.

    Hi,

Oh ok, I thought the transfer had been made. I changed domains with SiteGround, so I was under the impression that now that my site was transferred I would have the plugins option. I don’t have a new URL for my new WordPress site… I was under the impression that I could keep my URL and just transfer the domain to a new host but still have the capability of using plugins and installing themes. I hope that made sense.. :)

    Thank you,
    Cathryn

I was under the impression that I could keep my URL and just transfer the domain to a new host but still have the capability of using plugins and installing themes.

If you moved the content to the new host, then this is possible. First you need to point your domain to the name servers of your new host. Here are the instructions for that.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/#change-name-servers-to-point-the-domain-outside-of-wordpress-com

These are the specific instructions for how to find the info you need to change your DNS settings at SiteGround

    https://www.siteground.com/tutorials/getting_started/transfer_point_domain.htm

If you need help making the actual change I can help, I just need the name server information from your site ground account.

I see in one of your other requests that you are trying to transfer your domain. That’s also an option but the process is different. If you want to go that way let me know and we can follow that path instead.

Thank you very much for your help. I will try moving my content to my new host first. I thought I had already done this but I guess I didn’t make it that far. :) If I am having issues, I will definitely contact you. Thank you!

    Hi Liz,

I performed the transfer of my domain and it was confirmed by my new host. However, I am still confused as to how I am to get the Plugins option. I was under the impression that once I did the domain transfer, I would be able to get the plugin option. I still do not see this and am not sure how I am supposed to get it on my dashboard. Is this something you can help me with?

Ideally, I would like to get my new website, with my new plugin, up and running by this weekend. I hope this is achievable.

    Thank you!
    Cathryn

    Hi Cathryn,

Your domain cathryntoenyes.com is still pointed to WordPress.com, so you’re still seeing your site hosted at WordPress.com when you visit your domain. You won’t see options like plugins on your site here.

You’ll need to point your domain to your site at your new host — your host can help you with that process. Once that’s done, you’ll see your new site there when you visit your domain, with all of the options for that site.

    Ok, thank you.
