Adding Posts to Categories Only

Background: As a high school teacher, I am constantly trying to make my class blog more navigable. I recently saw Blurty used by another teacher (and I must say that WordPress is much better) and while I enjoyed what she does, I do not want to have a separate blog for each period (5 to maintain a year). I thought about having a page for each period, but that won’t work because pages are static and you can’t post to them although you can add content (see, I’ve done my reading).

What I want to do is force my students to go to the category for their particular period without having to read the most recent posts for all the other periods. I was wondering if it is at all possible to “force” the main page (front page . . . sorry, I can’t think of it’s real name right now) to be static and all posts to be filed under the assigned category rather than updating to a page.

Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. You can visit at http://www.shrewsenglishbhs.wordpress.com and please don’t hesitate to ask me to clarify anything.

You can set a static front page if you want; it will slaughter your SEO and Googlejuice, but it doesn’t sound like that’s a big problem here. Just go to Dashboard –> Options and set it there as a static page (the page must already exist). On that page, put links to each different (local) category, and if I were you I’d take the category widget out of the sidebar unless you want them to navigate around to the other period’s categories.

The main blog page will still update with all of those categories, but your students will be directed to the one most suitable for them.
