Maybe you can only do it with wordpress.org?

    Thank you,
    Graeme

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Since you are on WordPress.COM, you can’t add Re-Captcha to your site.

But Akismet is built in and it does a good job against spam for both comments & the Contact Form

I am visually challenged and pleased that Askismet works so well. It’s better than captchas. Here my 10 point case against CAPTCHA use http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/11/14/the-10-point-case-against-captcha-use/

    Thank you all.
This is the only factor making me want to get away from WordPress and get my hosting elsewhere.
It’s a pity for WordPress to have to do this for .com blog sites. :(

I don’t why on earth your would say that. Captchas are hackable. Captchas do provide a primary level of defense against spambots, but some of the more sophisticated bots are now able to read the more simple Captchas, and they are getting better all the time. There’s no doubt about the fact that Akismet is superior to captcha but suit yourself.

P.S. Also note that we are not allowed to post “signature links” at the bottom of our comments like you did above here. That kind of self promotion is not allowed in support threads.

timethief: I appologise for the signature link I didn’t know, but I know now thanks.

As for WP.com I was meaning why does WP not let you use plug-ins or the Free .com blogs?
That is the reason that I would change to a different hosting, that is all.

As for Captchas, yes they can be hacked, but not very well I believe and even if they do get hacked you can get the stats and find trends anyway.
I was also talking about Re-Captcha, Googles new version of Captcha which is apparently more secure and you get stats to find trends of hackers etc.

    Thanks again for the replies.

We are all blogging on the same multiuser blogging platform and allowing FTP access and blogger installed plugins would be a HUGE security risk. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

    Thanks for clearing that up.
I think I understand now. I am very limited in my knowledge of websites, this is my first website actually.

I just spent 3 years learning SEO to get to where I am today. I obviously have ALOT to learn!

    Cheers.

We all have a lot to learn every day we are online. Best wishes to you.

A bad plugin can crash your site completely – to get the site up takes FTP access. So extra code would be needed to deal with bad Plugin’s.

Many of the Widgets started as Plugin’s, your blog has way more Widgets than a standard blog not hosted here has, so you blog functions were not forgotten. WordPress.COM has opted for a solution that makes is easier to keep the sites here up and running and saves you money in the long run
