Adding separate blogs off a single domain?

Any ideas on this? How can I handle this in WordPress.com using the WP platform? (I have spent a few hours trying to find a solution; likely using the wrong keywords.)

The situation or problem to solve:

I want to cover several different topics, and to keep each topic in a separate blog.

Suppose I wanted the following blogs: gardening, art painting, woodworking.

      Possible solution 1:

    Can I buy a domain through wordpress.com (i.e., mynotsogroovyname.com), then add in my own subdomains (i.e., garden/mynotsogroovyname.com, painting.mynotsogroovyname.com, etc.)

      Possible solution 2:

Can I buy a domain and add separate blogs, each as a folder under the domain. I.e., mynotsogroovyname.com/garden, mynotsogroovyname.com/painting, etc.

Or am I overlooking something simple?

In any plan, want to have a page at the main domain with links to each of these separate blogs. Or the blog at the home location will have links and general update info, or something like that.

    MY SITUATION:

Years ago I had a single blog on a single domain name on WordPress.Com — easy to setup, easy update and maintenance. Planning to get back into the blogging, but have a few different topics and other family members who would like to blog.

I have worked on corporate websites and programmed back end programs and databases for these, but we did not use any WordPress.Org software nor have any blogs. And my only experience on blogs is with WordPress.Com with a special domain name and single blog at that spot. That was a simple and easy process.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    HMH

The simplest solution would be to assign a category to each blog post. Categories have their own link to a compilation of all the posts in the category. This link can be out in your menu creating category pages.

Read all about categories and category pages here.

    Organize Posts with Categories

And especially this on adding your categories to your menu.

    Organize Posts with Categories

You will still have one master blog with all your posts but you can choose whether to include it in your menu or not.

Let us know if this will do what you need.

For your family member contributions, you can give them specific roles .. such as Author that will allow them to publish their blog entries.

Another alternative especially for the family blogs would be for each to have their own WordPress.com site and link to each of them from your menu.

Unlike the “self-hosted” WordPress.org sites, you won’t have subdomains such as you probably are used to with the subfolders in your previous work environment. As you said WordPress.com is an easy process.

Correction: Disregard my last comment about subdomains.
