Adding Site to WordPress.com
-
I have a new site that I’ve created as part of a subdomain on an existing domain I own. The new site is two.ourwalkabout.com. In the WordPress.com dashboard there is an option to add a new site to the sites I already have on WordPress.com, but I can’t seem to do this without incurring some kind of subscription cost. The two sites I already have on WordPress.com I’ve had for years and I don’t pay WordPress.com anything to have them linked (I pay Bluehost to host them). Is the only way to add new sites to WordPress.com via a subscription these days?

Is the only way to map a domain for a site I already own via a paid subscription? I have two sites on WordPress.com that I don’t pay for, but I can’t seem to add a new one (two.ourwalkabout.com).

Hi there,
If you do not want to pay anything then you would have to go to Bluehost to have them host the website which will hold the subdomain.
Mapping a subdomain to WordPress.com requires a subscription fee and it is covered by the cost of a plan hence you are being asked to pay. You can read more about this here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-subdomain/
to the sites I already have on WordPress.com,
I just want to clear this part, yes those sites are appearing on your WordPress.com account because they are connected through jetpack. They are not actually hosted here on WordPress.com rather they are using the WordPress.org open-source software.
You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/
I have flagged your thread for staff as well, just in case i made an oversight.

This is a duplicate thread. Please follow the conversation on the other thread: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/adding-site-to-wordpress-com/

Just noting I’ve merged these threads since they weren’t exact duplicates.
@samvaltenbergs, paid plans help cover our costs for infrastructure and staffing, so we do feature those in signup and launch flows. We also have free plans that will give you a .wordpress.com subdomain (or one of our other free subdomains). These will also show ads, as the advertising also helps offset our costs. If you’d like, you can redirect your subdomain to one of those, though I’d recommend against doing a “framed” or “stealth” redirect since those can cause usability issues and problems with SEO.
For what it’s worth, though, paid plans remove ads, allow you to use a custom domain, and provide access to direct support. Plus they have several other handy features, depending on the plan you choose. You can compare all plans here:

Hi there,
@therefoiam is spot on. I checked your site and although they are connected to WordPress.com via Jetpack, they are actually not hosted on WordPress.com. They are using the open-source WordPress.org software and it appears that both sites are hosted with Bluehost.
Are you looking to host two.ourwalkabout.com on WordPress.com and map a subdomain to it or was it going to be hosted with Bluehost like the other two sites? It doesn’t appear that you are mapping a subdomain to a site hosted with WordPress.com since there are no WordPress.com sites under your account, so I would reach out to Bluehost in regards to setting up a subdomain:

Thanks!

staff-doublebassd and others, thanks for the response. Yes, two.ourwalkabout.com is hosted with Bluehost, as are my other two sites. two.ourwalkabout.com is also connected to WordPress.com via Jetpack like the other two sites. What I’m trying to do is get two.ourwalkabout.com to show up in my WordPress.com dashboard like my other two sites. In my WordPress.com dashboard under my sites it looks like this. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get two.ourwalkabout.com to show there as well. There is, of course, the “Add New Site” button, but that takes me through to domain mapping and paid plans, which I don’t want. I’d just like to replicate the setup I have on my other two Jetpack-connected, Bluhost-hosted sites.
NB: I’ve also tried using the WordPress.com app from my desktop.
Any ideas?

The site is connected via Jetpack, but not the WordPress.com account you’re currently logged in to.
Please try disconnecting Jetpack from WordPress.com at Jetpack > Dashboard > Site Connection > Manage Site Connection in your site’s Dashboard, then connect again when prompted to the desired account.
