Adding SSL certificate
-
Hello Folks,
I’m not a website specialist and am experiencing some confusion.
I bought our domain through GoDaddy and edit it through WordPress. We did not have a security certificate, but I bought one through GoDaddy today.
I believe one of my themes is over-riding the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) fields under Settings > General so I can’t add ‘https’ there.
How do I install the security certificate?
Thanks

Hi @bchen5c04dbe6ad, I didn’t see a site link, but I gather it’s hosted with GoDaddy?
If so, you’ll just want to make sure the site URL settings are right. I’d recommend asking your host for help with one of these options:
https://wordpress.org/support/article/changing-the-site-url/If your site is hosted here with us, it will already have SSL because we install and configure that for all of our customers.
Here’s the difference between the free WordPress software and our managed hosting services:

My site is hosted with GoDaddy and I bought an SSL certificate there.
When I try to change the URL in WordPress, those fields are greyed out. From the link, I’m inferring that I need to edit the wp-config.php file, which requires that I get FTP access.
Questions
1. Am I correct that I need to edit the wp-config.php file?
2. Is ftp the only way to edit that? -
Hi there,
Am I correct that I need to edit the wp-config.php file?
We can’t help directly because we don’t host your host (GoDaddy) uses the free open-source variant of the WordPress platform which functions differently than what we offer here on WordPress.com. Specifically we do not offer the ability to access or edit wp-config.php, but it is possible with the version of WordPress that GoDaddy uses.
The good news though is that help is available here at the open-source WordPress forums: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/
Is ftp the only way to edit that?
The folks at the forum I linked to above will be familiar with the change you are trying to make and are in the best position to help. If it turns out you need FTP access based on their recommendation, then GoDaddy support should be able to help you with getting that access.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction!
