Adding stories to menu

Hey there, I asked this question a bit ago and sort of got an answer but still can’t figure it out.

I’m trying to get my website where I have the menus at the top, and when you click it the stories will go under that menu item.

I figured out how to set up different pages, and how to post child pages under each one, but when I click on that page from the home screen nothing shows up. Is there a way to get it to where all the child pages show up under each page, sort of like a news website?

    Thanks sooo much in advance!

  • Hi there,

Just to clarify, when someone clicks on “Music” in the menu, for example, you want your posts to do with music to be listed?

Menus are not intended to list individual posts. To have the menu list individual posts you’ll need to manually add every new post you publish, and as you publish more posts the menu will soon become so cluttered that it becomes unusable, and can also start causing severe loading issues on your site.

I also see you have two “stories” published at http://caracooper.com/sports/bassett-graduate-jonah-mcreynolds-a-homegrown-ranger/ and http://caracooper.com/sports/former-bulletin-reporter-waid-receives-prestigious-nascar-hall-prize/, but you published those as pages. That is also not recommended.

People can’t subscribe to pages on your site, so no follower on your site will ever get a notification if you publish a story this way, search engines won’t index them as “current”, meaning they won’t rank as high in search results, you won’t be able to set up Publicize to auto-share those to your social media accounts, and again, adding them to your menu will be manual and will eventually break your site as the number of stories grow.

Start by publishing your stories as posts, not pages, and give each post a category, depending on which menu tab you want them to appear under.

Then you add those categories to your menu, instead of the blank pages you currently have added. If you click on a menu tab, it will then load a page that lists only the posts published under that particular category, but it will list them the same way your blog page does, showing either the full post or an excerpt depending on your settings, and with the most recent at the top.

Please consider this rather than the setup you currently have going, as long term it will make your site much more usable.

As for why your child pages you currently have set are not working, it’s because they’re not added to your custom menu. Go to My Site ->Customize ->Menus and click on Primary. That is the menu that’s currently active on your site, and the child pages are not added to that menu. You need to click Add Items, add them there, and indent them under the appropriate parent page in order to create a submenu.

Setting a page as a child page in the page editor will only create a submenu if you’re using the default menu for your theme, not if you have a custom menu active. Child pages always need to be added manually to a custom menu.

Thank you soooo much! That is exactly what I wanted.

One more question – how do I get it to where under the categories it only shows a blurb of the story (not the whole thing), so people have to click the actual post?

  • Head to Customize > Content Options, and set Blog Display to Post Excerpt. That should do the trick.

Enjoy your weekend, and let us know if you need more help!
