You can choose to use a three column theme like one of these 52 three column themes. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/three-columns/
-
Note that if you use Windows Live Writer it has a table maker > http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/windows-live-writer/
To create your own HTML tables see here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2013/04/09/table-coding-for-wordpress-com-users/
But you do not need to create a table to have 2 columns in posts or pages. See https://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/06/10/formatting-text-pt-1/ -
how do i put the three columns in effect once i choose a three column theme. It does not seem to give me the option to do so and can I treat three columns like a table which is probably like more of what I need. I am trying to recreate this website in wordpress. with also the button links in the header http://www.melisannerusso.com

Three column themes have a sidebar for widgets on each side of the main column which is for post or page content.
All widgets are accessed here > Appearance > Widgets
with also the button links in the header
Any theme here can have a custom menu and many have that menu bar positioned horizontally at the top of the blog usually under the header image. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

I picked one of the themes you suggested in the list for three columns. I picked the Visual Theme. I am at the side bar under widgets and I do not see anything about using the three columns. I want to post content that was previously post on a website I am looking to replace with wordpress. I want to show it by the original date I posted it. It is not giving me an option to chose which column or how many columns. Did I pick the wrong theme? Also I tried the table and it left alot of space above the words and below and did not allow me to add blank space by pressing the space key to create better spaceing.

I think you’d better start over.
You have to Import content properly if you want it to show up with dates etc intact. See Import instructions in the Support documents http://support.wordpress.com/
http://fruitfulartist.wordpress.com/ has no content at all.
When you say three columns, you mean three columns of content. But when WP.com says three columns what it means is one column of content and two sidebars. The ONLY themes that do what you want are the modular new ones like Oxygen and DePoMasthead.

Themes are retired when thy no longer support all WordPress.com features. DePo Masthead, is now retired. We invite you to try out a newer theme; start by browsing our WordPress theme directory. http://wordpress.com/themes/
