adding tabs?
-
I started my blog today, planning on just posting bits of my writing to see how I grow overtime and to share the experience with others. I am wondering how would I make categories directly right of my name sort of with a drop-down thing where you can see my pieces. At the moment I have to scroll down to see my posts and although minor, it is an inconvenience. Thanks for any responses and I’ll be sure to check out your blogs!

Not sure if I fully understand what you want to do.
If you want to make jumping to your posts faster, then a Recent Posts widget in the left sidebar would do nicely. Try this page:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/If you want to highlight the categories you are writing about then a Categories Widget in the sidebar (same link as above) or you can make categories menu items in the top navigation bar. Try this page:

Different themes display them differently, but you could also use a Custom Menu to highlight categories in your navigation menu. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ and here
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/Custom menus are also available in a widget, so technically you could have two or more navigation menus for your site: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/custom-menu-widget/
