Adding text to featured image
-
Hi there
I am very new, so these are true beginners questions (sorry). I’ve spent two days looking at wordpress support and my theme’s documentation and Googling. But I’m still completely discombobulated. I hope someone can help me!
I bought ‘Caldwell’ and a premium upgrade. I can’t get my front page to look like the demo. I’d like text on the featured image. Also, I can’t get three images in blocks under the featured image.
Thank you lovely people (in advance)

Hi Annie :)
No need to be sorry, I learned something myself from looking into this for you!
The featured image in this theme actually includes text as part of the picture itself. What this means is that it’s not a separate element that can be added or edited over the picture – it needs to be included via Photoshop, Paint or another image editing program, using the text tool there. Save the whole thing as an image file, upload it as normal, and that should work.
Hope that makes sense to begin with? Just shout if you have any further trouble.

Ah yes, perfect sense thank you so much. Second simple (but for me extremely frustrating thing) is that I can’t get the three blocks below the featured image. maybe it’s the page template? I have it on grid? Thank you again, I’m starting to feel almost sane.

Caldwell is a premium theme. All Premium themes have their own support forums https://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/caldwell where you can post and get support directly from the theme designer.
-
P.S. See here for the detailed theme description page https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/caldwell/ and scroll down to “Featured Content”
Caldwell uses up to four Featured Content blocks on the homepage: one large block that spans the full width of the browser, and three smaller blocks below. Setting a featured image on the homepage displays the image instead of the large featured content block.

Howdy Annie!
In order to have the boxes appear underneath your front page, you will need to do the following:
1. Make a new page that you want to appear as a small box under the main page
2. Set a featured image for the new page
3. Set the home page as the parent page of the new page. To to this, use the “Parent Page” option on the left-hand side of the new editor as shown here:
You can find a bit more about parent pages here:
Can you give those steps a try?
Just a note, we have some more documentation on Caldwell and the setup process here:

Hi Jeremy
Yesss! That worked. Thank you, sincerely.
I suspect that I will become a serial pest because you are so helpful, but thanks for the link to more info. I’ll go and study it before I ask again. I want to make the 3 boxes appear above the footer and also to have them act as a link, as in the demo.
I’ll be back if I can’t sort it out. But thanks for now.
Regards

Hey Annie!
No problem – if you have any questions, ask away!
Regarding the links, they should already link to the actual page like this:
Is that working correctly for you now?
-
Hi Jeremy
The links seem to be working OK, thanks. But :
1) I’m having trouble with my large featured image. What size should it be so the whole image that I’ve saved shows?
2) Can I stop the word Home from appearing on the featured image?
3) The 3 smaller images appear below the footer. How can get the footer to go below them?
(aarrgghh)!
I really appreciate your help.

Hi Annie!
I fear as though I may have led you astray with the parent pages bit. I really apologize! Just to make sure we’re on the same page, we’re trying to recreate a site like the demo here:
https://caldwelldemo.wordpress.com/
Is that correct? If so, can you follow these steps?
1. Change the title of the page here to whatever you would like displayed:
https://ellybelly2.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=14&action=edit
For example, in the demo, the title of that page is “Introducing Caldwell”
2. Rather than do the child pages bit, we’re going to use tags to indicate which pages we want shown here:
The “tag” currently set for this is called “featured”. You can see that by clicking on “Featured Content” here:
This means that any page or post we add the “featured” tag to will appear on that page.
3. Navigate to the following four pages:
https://ellybelly2.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=148&action=edit
https://ellybelly2.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=141&action=edit
https://ellybelly2.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=145&action=edit
https://ellybelly2.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=14&action=edit
On the right-hand side of the Edit Page screen, enter “Featured” under the tag area shown here:
While you’re on these pages, you’ll want to set the Parent Page to “No Parent,” undoing the misguided work that I sent you on earlier.
For the featured images, you’ll want to make sure they’re set to 1600×600.
Can you give those three steps a try? That should get us started in the right direction. I’m sorry for steering you wrong earlier!

Hey – thanks Jeremy. I’ll do all that tomorrow morning. So helpful. Thanks. I’l let you know!
Cheers

Hi Jeremy
Sad to say, still having problems – but there is progress because my original request is sorted – thanks to you. Now –
The ‘simply put’ has disappeared from the large featured image.
Can I get a home page link in the menu, or will it have to be ‘simply put’?
On the ‘get a quote’ image there is a large ‘simply put’. Can I get rid of it?
Oh dear. I haven’t even started on the real content yet.
Cheers

Hi Jeremy
I’ve sorted all the above problems out. But… I can’t get the smaller images in the order I’d like them in. I’ve tried using the page order box but it doesn’t do anything – maybe because they aren’t child pages any more?

Awesome! The home page is looking great.
I can’t get the smaller images in the order I’d like them in. I’ve tried using the page order box but it doesn’t do anything – maybe because they aren’t child pages any more?
The order will be based on publish date. From left to right, the order will be oldest to newest along the bottom. If you’d like to change the order, you would need to change the published date here:
https://ellybelly2.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page
Just click “Quick Edit” underneath the post, and you’ll have the option to change the publish date:
