Adding those cute little twitter, and fb symbols to sidebar
-
Sorry, this is probably lame, but I can’t seem to figure out how one adds those little symbol widgets to the sidebar that I always see on everyone elses’ sites – the “f” for facebook and the little bird for twitter – those guys?? Where do I find those for uploading to my site and how? Thank you in advance!!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

On where to find them, you can search Google for the different icons. Here’s once page that shows many of them. Scroll down to the bottom for more and also the top left tags:

So thank you darrahford, I downloaded some onto my desktop, but now how exactly do I get them into my sidebar? Thanks so much I appreciate the help!

I’m hoping WordPress.com will add this as a widget. In my humble opinion it would save a lot of space on the servers. As it stands now, everybody has to individually upload each twitter and facebook icon. If WordPress made it a widget, and hosted the icons in one place and made them available to everybody, it would be good for them and good for us. … as I said, in my humble opinion. X

It is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
In the widgets area select a Text widget and drag it to your sidepanel. Then you can put in the text at the end of the post. The following is for twitter. replace willscookson with your user name on twitter. the img src is the icon that you want to use (I chose a widget and uploaded it to wordpress). Remember if you want multiple widgets to choose the right size of widget. Mine is 32×32. I don’t use the alt tag on my wordpress and its usually a bit redundant.
For multiple just add the relevant entries for the others. Mine has 4 icons for Twitter, You tube, Facebook and Flickr. All the same principle.
Hope this helps!

OK, I’ve done this, but then all the rest of the content of the Sidebar disappears. How to put “Follow me on Twitter” on top of the Sidebar without kicking-off all the remaining links to Random Posts, Tag Cloud, Categories and Blogroll?
-
@joseortiga, see this post for Panos on why the widgets disappear and how to fix it.
-
Another option after uploading the icons to your WordPress.com blog is to use multiple Image Widgets. They won’t line up side to side, though. So esthetically speaking, keep it to a minimum. :)
@willcookson-just so you know, those alt tags aren’t redundant if your visitor is visually challenged and using a text browser or generally if your image fails to load.

Thank you thesacredpath and justjennifer. In the meantime I’ve just got illuminated by a lightning and made it as image widget. I’ve put the “Follow-me” Twitter button link from:
as image URL and appropriate title. Then I’ve put my Twitter URL down-under as Link URL (when the image is clicked). The button is being re-sized to 65 x 65 pix. Watch the result:
if you please…….

That looks nice. Did you check out mine in my sidebar? I made an HTML table, uploaded all the images into it, and linked them to my various profile pages on the social networking sites. I display the HTML table in a text widget titled “Subscribe and Follow”.

Thanks timethief. I’ll copy your style for my next blog. I have made this one to be a war-machine and for the identity protection law the non-public persons must not be identified by name, which would be indirectly the case if my real name appeared. So I’ve made a blog and twitter only… for the time being. Follow me if you please. So you’ll get the info when your system will go public on my blog.

I still can’t figure out what to do with the .png file once I’ve downloaded it (from http://www.iconarchive.com/show/web-2-icons-by-fasticon/Twitter-icon.html). Where do I get the code to copy and paste into the text widget? I am totally new to this, so please explain even the very basics!

Have a look at the links thesacredpath posted above

@joseortiga-actually I didn’t notice that you are using iNove. That’s one theme where you can insert both twitter icons very easily right next to the RSS icon under the Theme Options. It’d be great if WordPress.com would include FB as well.

/doubletake…
That’s one theme where you can insert both twitter icons …
Sorry, that should have read, “…where you can insert the twitter icon..

Thanks justjennifer. This explanation was really helpful to me, too: http://lorelle.wordpress.com/2005/11/13/buttons-bows-and-badges-for-your-blog/

That’s been a Columbus Egg, justjennifer. So elementary, so simple – therefore: so difficult to think about. He He. Thank you.
