Adding users on WordPress.com Business plan

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’m considering switching a site that I’ve run for some time onto the Business plan. Because of the specific nature of this site, it’s important to me that I be able to create user accounts and send my contributors their information to log in. Would this be possible under the Business plan or is that only possible under a WordPress.org installation?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

In order to add users, all you need to do is to click ‘Add’ on the People section of the Admin panel.

See the full article here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

    Hope this helps,

    Paul

    Paul,

I apologize; I should’ve been clearer. What I’m asking is whether I would be able to do this without sending them an invite, the way I could do on a WordPress.org site—just create their account and send them their username and password. Is that a thing on WordPress.com?

    Hi @mcqshield,

Unfortunately not, it’s not a thing offered on WordPress.com by default.

The Business Plan would allow you to install custom plugins, and there’s almost certainly a plugin out there that would help you do what you’re intending. We’re unable to recommend a specific plugin which can help you achieve this though, however it may help if you clarify your next step after sending them a username/password.

    Thank you. :)

  • Hi there,

This is not possible on WordPress.com, period. Contributor access to a WordPress.com site requires a WordPress.com account. You cannot create a user account directly on the site in WP-Admin on any WordPress.com site, including Business Plan sites.

User management is a built in feature of the Core WordPress software and does not require plugins. But that feature is overridden by Jetpack’s secure sign-on feature on all Business Plan sites – Jetpack SSO only allows people to log into WP-Admin via a WordPress.com account that’s been added to the site.

@kokkieh Oh, okay, didn’t know that! Thanks for sharing.
