Adding users to private blog; users not appearing on blog list

I must add my classmates to my private blog. Some email addresses are appearing on privacy settings page, indicating these classmates can read my blog, and other email addresses do not appear after I add them. Why?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

They need to sign up with wp.com (not necessarily for a blog, just a username).

Your new contributor will receive an email inviting them to sign up for a WordPress.com account (and, optionally, create their own blog if they want). Once they have signed up, you’ll see them listed as a Contributor on your Users tab. You can change them to a different role (Author or Editor) later if you’d like.

The difference between each of the roles is explained here.

The users on a private blog don’t necessarily have permissions for any of those roles as contributor. They can simply be people who are allowed to read the private blog.

Thanks for your responses! Please bear with me, I’m old and cranky and learning!! I’ve searched the help forums to find the answers to my questions before writing here.

I submitted my 1st blog entry tonight. Will my classmates whose email addresses appear on my Privacy Settings list be notified by email that I posted an entry tonight?

Can it be that classmates are not appearing in my users tab because they have not set up their own blogs yet?

I’m only trying to activate my classmates to leave a comment, not be Contributors to my blog. Still can’t figure that out. Please advise.

    Thanks,
    Maura

“Can it be that classmates are not appearing in my users tab because they have not set up their own blogs yet?”

Your classmates do not have to start a blog. They need only sign up for an account at WordPress.com: wp.com will recognize their email addresses and so know that they are allowed to read your private blog. Without an account, wp.com won’t recognize your friends: they must have an account with an email in order to be recognized. (as Panos said)

Your readers will not be designated as contributors, authors, or any other role to write on your blog unless you send a different sort of invitation. You invite your friends to just read your (private) blog.

Your readers will not be notified about your new post unless you send them an email yourself.
