Adding viewers to private blog not showing up in "users"

I would like to maintain a private blog for students and parents of an elementary school. I need it to be closed so only those invited may post and read posts. When I invite a “viewer” they accept, create a new wordpress account, try to login and get box say blog is private and they need to request access. When I the admin receive the email and grant access, the users log in but can not post. Text box in middle of screen shows spinning W but never resolves to text input box. Also users never show up in “users” list in admin’s dashboard.

There are two different things here. There is adding users to a private site so that they can read it and comment on it, and then there is adding users as contributors or authors so that they can create posts on the site.
Authors and contributors have to be added at users > invite new.

Users added at settings > privacy (to view and comment on site) will be listed there.
Users added at users > invite new will show up at users > all users.

Thanks, I now see test users at settings > privacy but no users show up in the list of users at users>all users. I only see my self as admin. I sure would like all the users to show up where I can adjust privileges as our discussion evolves. I would also like to invite my principal as co administrator. The process becomes confusing for new folks who get an invitation, then have to create a usher identity, then have to request access!
With me as a new user/admin as well I find my self lost in the process. Ideally I would like to invite emails I have for parents, they would come to our site, enter a site password and then have access to post new, and comment. Is that too far outside of the way tngs work?

I think I have a similar problem. I’ve had this button in the past, so i know it isn’t connected to my name or blog. I need to Add a User — my Users drop down menu no longer shows ADD USER. It only shows INVITE USER. Then when the person I’m trying to get on to help me edit clicks on the link, it tells her to sign in with her name and password. Only I can’t give her a name and password because I can’t add her!
what do i do? Does she have to have her own WP account to manage this? -
