Is this the blog you are talking about http://mysportscouch.wordpress.com/ ? If so, always provide a link to the blog when asking a question here in the forums since we typically have to be able to see the blog in order to help.
Most widget code that you find out there is made for self-hosted wordpress blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG and will not work here. The reason is that they typically contain either javascript, flash or iframes and none of those are allowed here due to security concerns.
If they have plain HTML widget code, then you might be able to add it here by pasting it into a text widget.

Would you recommend using WordPress.org instead? I will want to add several widgets from different sites. Is WordPress.org as easy to use ase wordpress.com?
Or should I just point the wordpress.com site I have to an outside domain and thus, be able to put in outside widgets?

It entirely depends on whether you’re willing to pay for hosting and a domain name and able to handle your own technical support, upgrades, etc.
Also: the domain upgrade will NOT affect your ability to put in widgets from outside. Domain mapping doesn’t suddenly take a blog off WP.com. Each upgrade applies only to specifically what it says and doesn’t confer any other benefits.
