Additional language options on login screen

Suggesting “also in Russian available” when trying to connect from Lithuania is some kind of insult. We know English, Russian is the language of occupants who deported a significant fraction of Lithuania’s population after annexation in 1940’s – the most intelligent and most diligent part of the nation. I’d rather not to see such a proposal. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

Language suggestions on the login page are determined by one of two things:

First we look at the HTTP headers your browser sends us, specifically the ACCEPT-LANGUAGE header. So if you have any language set there for which we offer a landing page, you’ll see a suggestion for that language.

If the ACCEPT-LANGUAGE header doesn’t contain any language we support, we show a suggestion based on your IP address instead, provided your IP is located in a country for which we have a translated login page.

The IP address you’re using to access WordPress.com is geo-located in Lithuania, and we don’t suggest Russian for Lithuanian IPs, so your browser is likely indicated that as an accepted language.

To check what languages your browser includes in that HTTP header you can look at https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/what-http-headers-is-my-browser-sending

If Russian is indicated for that header, you can changed that under the “Preferred languages” option in your browser settings.
